These mass shootings have amounted to a public health crisis. The gun industry reminds me of the tobacco industry -- selling a lethal product but washing their hands of the consequences. Well, the tobacco industry eventually had to admit their lies. They have had to put warning labels on their products. They've seen their sales shrink. And tobacco has been taxed and banned in many places. People still smoke, but we are no longer duped into believing that cigarettes are safe or just an individual choice.
Join me below the squiggle.
We can do the same thing with guns.
What about public service ads with actual facts about gun violence? Like the ones we see about second-hand smoke?
What about pushing for massive warning labels on all gun packaging? And bullets too?
What about banning guns from work places? And other places where people congregate?
What about taxing guns and ammo? Let the proceeds pay for victims services.
What about gun-cessation programs? Programs that teach people the truth about guns and self-defense?
We don't only need to ban assault weapons, but to directly challenge the gun culture. That's the big difference between the U.S. and other nations. We're supposed to be a God-fearing nation, but we act as if we're unsafe all the time and need guns attached to our hips everywhere we go, even to church.
