Here is what we are up against folks.
This statement proceeds from a fantasy-prone mind. I had originally said a sick mind. But John in North Carolina is not mentally ill. I call his condition the gun-addled mind. For this man the solution to gun violence is more guns. Back at the time of the Aurora CO massacre when I was still actively debate tweeting I read a lot of similar nonsense.
None of the gun-addled could ever publicly accept that more shooters in that theater would have resulted in more dead people with no assurance that the perpetrator would be among them.
They tended instead to depict vistas of galant derring-do from an essentially suburbanite civilian carrying his concealed glock. One minute he is a paunchy middle-aged movie goer munching his popcorn in anticipation of a vicarious adventure; the next he is the adventure. Amidst tear gas billows, he manages a combat roll out of his seat, his glock clears holster leather and he is up firing. Problem solved.
I can accept that the outcome favored by the gun-addled mind is possible. It is by no means the most probable or likely outcome. But it could happen. Why can they not accept the more realistic scenario where NO ONE but the would be murderer actually knows what is happening. A scenario where instead of calm and collectedness, everyone is panicked, gassed and pants-peeing-&-poopin scared? Why can they not see that even those with a gun and the presence of mind to use it, are going to be shooting at everyone else with a gun; none of whom are required to be the murderer?
I am a librarian not a psych guy so I don't have the answer. But I've spent some time trying to grok (Hattip: Robert Heinlein) the mental and emotional state of our Libertarian friends. What I found was that they go in big-time for romanticism. A definition of romanticism goes: "A movement in the arts and literature that originated in the late 18th century, emphasizing inspiration, subjectivity, and the primacy of the individual."
The good news is that the craziest gun-addled Libertarians live out their romanticism straight-up. They are not often encountered outside of their heavily armed survivalist redoubts. The bad news? The most dangerous are those living out a gun and gold laden Libertarian romanticist fantasy inside a paunchy middle-aged body on a suburban street near you. They are the NRA. They vote. And they are the people most likely to shoot you in our conceal and carry society.
