Each time our nation suffers through another horrifying mass shooting we are told by the NRA and their enthusiasts that ANY restrictions on gun rights is the start down the proverbial slippery slope that will end with the government taking everybody's guns away. The truth is far different. We have already slid down the slippery slope and are now lying in a crumpled heap at the bottom.

The NRA used to be an organization that promoted gun safety, marksmanship and hunting. They have drifted far away from that and have become a group of fanatical gun rights advocated that now twist the meaning of the second amendment to cover whatever new advanced weaponry the gun manufacturers have invented from assault rifles to "cop killer" bullets to mega-magazines that hold dozens of bullets. We began sliding down the slippery slope when we stopped pushing back against making military-style weapons available to ordinary citizens. When the Assault Weapons Ban wasn't re-authorized we slid a lot farther. And every time there is a shooting and the NRA mouthpieces tell us "Now isn't the time to talk about gun violence", or we need MORE guns and we need to arm teachers and principals so that the next time a crazy person shoots up a school, the principal can pop a cap in his ass. Why aren't we ever allowed to look at the way other countries have dealt with gun violence and learn from them? Why can't we look to Canada, a country so similar to ours in culture, and see why they have so few gun deaths and we have so many?

Get ready for the gun crazies to tell us that this terrible atrocity is just what President Obama has been waiting for to take away everybody's guns. I say ENOUGH! Enough of being manipulated by gun manufacturers, lobbyists and the NRA. It's time for sensible gun policies that protect innocent citizens from the tragedies we are suffering through again and again. Time to climb back up that slippery slope.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

They've flooded and pushed more and more of these military-like weapons. They control these companies. They could have turned it off, turned it down after one crisis. Instead, they are still part of these old marching orders to tell people we need more guns. The more volume and cross sales the better for their wallet. They've flooded the sales channels with this junk from the masks to the military-grade weapons.

and their lobbyist army. I used to be a member of the NRA when I was a Boy Scout. The monthly magazine had articles on shooting hunting rifles accurately, gun safety and sensible handling and storage of fire arms. I either ignored the political hysterics about gun control or it wasn't present in the organization back in the day.

The NRA is now like an army of smokers organized and directed by the tobacco companies. Except the gun nuts advocate for other peoples destruction not just their own.

Is the real problem as far as how to get anything passed.

I mean we have Heller now saying the second amendment is an individual right, we have numerous laws that have WEAKENED gun laws.

Yet the whole NRA and paranoid segment of the gun culture still is paranoid.

I think there are ways of allowing people to have guns but nearly eliminating mass shootings.

However those ways will never pass until people know the ultimate goal is not to remove all their firearms.

The idea of making the guns more safe and secure has to be done carefully. I remember what happened before and this country cannot take another Republican takeover for that long.
