Just a short diary here to remind/inform people that semi-automatics are very dangerous, if not more so, than fully automatic weapons.

The "we shouldn't ban guns/rifles because they are only semi-automatics" argument doesn't hold water as any gun owner or military personnel will readily acknowledge.

The reason should be fairly obvious: accuracy! The first round out of the barrel may find the target, but the recoil causes the barrel to rise and all subsequent rounds are highly, yes highly, UNlikely to hit your target from a fully automatic weapon.

Why do you think they developed the 3-round burst in the first place? Why do you think military personnel qualify on 40 targets on the semi-automatic selection?

It's to improve accuracy and killing effectiveness while conserving ammo. It's one of the first things your drill sergeant tells you at basic training.

Bottomline, semi-automatics are arguably even more dangerous than fully automatics. I'm not necessarily calling for a ban on all semi-automatic weapons, but regulating them has merit.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Republicans can easily start to win elections by simply renouncing their party and becoming Democrats.

Semi-automatic assault rifles are designed to be highly efficient killing machines and are meant to be used in warfare against enemies at fairly close ranges.  They're not very good hunting rifles.  They're not good target rifles.  They're not even very good door stops.   But they kill people remarkably well.   They should not be in the hands of untrained civilians.  They are military weapons and should be restricted to trained soldiers on active duty.

And the newer military weapons don't even have the fully automatic option anymore.

"They're not very good hunting rifles."

AR-platform rifles are probably the second most common hunting rifle in America today after bolt action rifles. Most states regulate magazine capacity in hunting rifles to 5 rounds.

"They're not good target rifles. "

That is incorrect. Long range target shooting with AR-type rifles is a very popular and widespread shooting sport, and that type of rifle properly tuned is exceedingly accurate, rivaling a good bolt action rifle in accuracy.

Anyone who doesn't understand that should be allowed to own one.

Fully automatic weapons are largely used to make the enemy keep their heads down, rather than to kill large numbers of people.  Their purpose kind of changed when generals stopped sending human waves directly into fortified trenches.

What that means, though, is that fully automatic weapons have absolutely no civilian purpose.  At all.  Period.  End of story.

There are legitimate civilian purposes for some semi-automatic weapons.

A reckless fumblefingered dipshit is a lot more dangerous with a fully automatic weapon.  It's not one "accidental" firing, it's half a dozen or more.

This place needs a PVP server.
