I figured it was coming and State of Florida representative Dennis Baxley (R-Ocala) has articulated the gun wing nut response to the latest mass school shooting. He contends that making schools gun free zones makes them more dangerous. He offers these words of wisdom.
“We need to be more realistic at looking at this policy. In our zealousness to protect people from harm we’ve created all these gun-free zones and what we’ve inadvertently done is we’ve made them a target. A helpless target is exactly what a deranged person is looking for where they cannot be stopped. If you prepare ordinary people to take responsibility for stopping violence, they do. Otherwise we’re just creating more vulnerability. I know that it’s very foreign to people that live in more left and urbanized culture to see how that works, but in fact it does work.”
He is, of course, advocating arming teachers and principals, He is also the person who sponsored Florida’s “stand your ground” law. So, representatives of the NRA are offering a solution to the problem. It goes well with the religious right’s explanation of the cause, that is, we took God out of the classroom so now kids aren’t taught any kind of morality. All of this makes me even sadder than I was about the gun culture in this country.
