It was Holmes that offered the most famous, repeated, and I believe most important observation about clues to what is happening - "The Dog the Didn't bark."  I believe I am witnessing something extraordinary on DailyKos that perhaps sums up the last few days more than any diary could - "The pie fight that is not happening."  There have always been pie fights when a popular politician is criticized at any length.  There are those that rush to his or her defense.  It is annoying but I also thought there was something wonderful about them - in some ways they kept balance.  I think Obama has been the subject of his share of pie fights.  I remember being part of one or two myself.  There were always those rushing to defend Obama with as loud a pen as they could, with enough allies to get at least a few diaries to the recommended list.  But what I just realized this time - even though Obama is being flayed without mercy on DailyKos and across the progressive movement - there is no pie fight.  There is nobody claiming eleven dimensional chess or that Obama is making a Hobbesian choice he was forced into.  There are very few admonishing us to wait.  This leads me to believe that, another great line, Obama has screwed the pooch on this one.  Even many of his dead enders have been stunned into silence.

My feelings are so mixed about Obama.  OnePissedoffliberal has a diary at the top of the recommended list that perfectly describes my feeling.  But I always thought as long as there are people who have hope, there must be hope.  But Obama's last few days on the deficit talks seem to have drowned hope, drowned out everything.  He betrayed Biden (who may never now be the Democratic candidate for president because he promised social security should not be touched).  He betrayed Pelosi, who I don't think will ever be speaker again.  He betrayed Reid who will have a much more difficult time controlling his caucus.  Maybe most of all he betrayed himself.  He was poised to push ahead the most far reaching gun control in a generation or more, and now he has stepped completely on his message with this deficit deal.  Why now, why this way?  I know the explanations that Obama always wanted to cut social security, but even if true it was a massive bargaining chip, he could have used it to get something he really believed in.  He gave it away so Boehner could laugh at him like a well oiled confidence man counting his money on the way out of town.  It makes absolutely no sense no matter what reason you give for it.  The only explanation is that Obama is kind of a schlemiel.  He'd be great as a professor, or as a white knight lawyer (although not one that has to negotiate).  But not as president.  Maybe that is why the silence, the despair, the lack of energy to fight for him.

By the way I think he can salvage this by giving Boehner twelve hours to accept and then pulling the deal off the table.  Then we can all buckle our seat belts for the cliff.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  as a former pie fighter, let me say this: (15+ / 0-)

my views haven't changed.  only my desire to state them again and again and again has.

we had this same exact fight in 2010 and 2011.  I'm just tired of it.

it's not that I think he screwed any pooch.  for that matter, I'll wager most of the same people who never trusted him still don't.  most of the same people who did (post 2012 election, I mean) still do.

    •  That's my take on it. (7+ / 0-)

I see the same usual suspects stating the same smears about him and I am just too damn sick of it to fight about it again. These people aren't worth the effort. Besides Obama won re-election and changing people's opinions of Obama here isn't worth the effort.

Besides most of the people who were strong supporters of Obama have moved on from this site long ago.

I do admit to being disappointed that Jed has bought the same toxic Obama character attacks that many of the other FPs have been using for years now.

Since it's not a hugely compelling story, however, I too lack a profound desire to state them again and again and again.

    •  Amen (5+ / 0-)

Besides, I read through the above mentioned diary and saw a post stating something to the effect of "well, where are his defenders now, huddling behind the curtains?" or something.

      ::deep sigh::

No, actually, I just went on winter break a few days ago and immediately came down with the flu. Well, almost immediately. Iow, I've been kind of scary sick in that this seemed to come out of nowhere and I can't go outside now without breaking into wheezing and I can barely swallow and all that stuff, and I just don't do sick very well.

In any case, doesn't matter---that seemed like the perfect way to shut down any possibility of discussion.

I don't know what's going on. I'm not a mind reader. I haven't followed much of anything the past day or so because I've been knocked out in bed.

And given what I've seen here the past few hours, I will probably go back into my old mode and not rely on Daily Kos for news anymore.

I'm fine as long as I'm inside, but there's something in the air outside that is making me start to wheeze. It hasn't gone very far because, the minute it starts, I run back inside.

Believe it or not, though, I am better. I'm no longer losing gallons upon gallons of snot from my nose, I can now lay down for an hour or so before my nose clogs back up, etc.

Still, I'm giving it until tomorrow, and if the air outside still sets off wheezing, I'm going to the doctor. Otherwise, I am better.

I'm planning on making ice cream for dinner ...

  •  He is not up for reelection (4+ / 0-)

was pretty sure that many of those who appeared out of nowhere in 2008 would disappear just as quickly as soon as the 2012 election was a done deal.

Saying that, there are a few who have now started attacking Obama from the left as if they had never run interference on his behalf.

There are a few more who have done a 180 and aknowledged the shift (kudos to them)

and there are about three who are carrying on in the same vein as they did pre November this year.

As for the fight - I'm quite really sickened by the piling-on and disrespect of Pres. Obama here the last couple days. Ffs, we're something like 10 days away from the "cliff" deadline still, everyone should know that all the talks are just that - talk. Nothing is decided. And the reports we're hearing are mostly from "unnamed" sources really by a media in which we have no trust on anything else. But let one of the journo-hacks slip something that could be used against our President, and nearly the entire site is ready to pillory him.

It makes me sick. They've forgotten how he pulled us out so many other negotiations in the past. The gloom & doom prophesied by the faithless ones here never came to past. Think it's gonna be any different now? I don't.

But, I've kept quiet. I've learned the utter futility of debating the faithless ones. It's like taking on the RKBA, and I've been doing plenty of that lately. Seems a bit more useful, given the current events.

So, those of you who think the President is a spinelesscavingwimpylousynegotiatorterriblehorriblebadnogoodpresident or whatever, I suggest  you:

    •  Have to agree with you strongly here (6+ / 0-)

Yesterday, I got sick of the tone of weakly-sourced, hyperbolic, martyred betrayal and the attendant dismissals of not having my eyes sufficiently open or sadistically gleeful mockery of "11 dimentional chess", so I decided to check thru prior posts and see if there was anything there to suppress the bile and restore hope. Instead, I noticed that I made no comments Monday at all, and very few yesterday.

I find myself nearing a TTFN, but I've only been back here after a time away for about 6 weeks. Maybe after the new year, these pie fights that aren't pie fights will abate and the hyperbole will give way to a healthier skepticism that wants to know rather than an unflinching cynicism telling us what it wants to be true. Or maybe the Mayans were onto something...

      •  There will likely always be (5+ / 0-)

some version of the pie fights here. Personally, I find them way less upsetting now that I don't have to worry that they might result in a Romney victory.

Some people will always disagree with Obama on policy, and that's fine by me. Some people can't seem to express their disagreement without being personally insulting, and that's not fine by me but it's easy to avoid. My solution is to stay out of the diaries where that's likely to happen.
