Daily Kos is tremendously important and valuable to me. I want to say that right up front. This site has long been a superb resource for me. I started coming here almost a decade ago, and it's a place I come to learn what's going on -- often before it's reported elsewhere -- to gain new insights into what's going on, and to challenge my own thinking on what's going on. Not bad for a website that's available free of charge. I'll get back to that free of charge thing.

But not only do I come here for the information, for the what, of DailyKos, I also come for the people I've met and continue to meet here. The DailyKos community is now a part of my life, a part I treasure. In particular, my involvement with the Black Kos community gave me the opportunity, thanks to its leaders, to be a part of a Netroots Nation panel that was profoundly meaningful to me. And participating in the twice weekly Black Kos community posts is something I look forward to every few days. I encourage any of you with an interest in race in America, in learning more about African-American history and culture, or black-themed issues globally, to please come on by our "porch".

I was honored to be asked to write a post appealing to you all to subscribe and/or donate to Daily Kos. So that's what I'm doing here, asking you to subscribe and/or donate.

I have so much respect for the work done by the staff and by all of us who post and comment to make this site the valued resource it is. I've been a subscriber for a while now, and I've gotten far more from the site than I've paid into it.

For many of you, this economy means you don't have money to waste, or even to spend on something worthwhile. For those who can spare a small donation, that's great and it matters. If you're fortunate enough to be a bit more "liberal" (!) with your cash, then please consider a subscription, either for yourself or, if you've already got one, consider giving a gift subscription to someone on the site to whom you want to show some love. And yes, that's about as much humor as I've got (liberal is a double entendre, get it?!!-Hardee, har, har), maybe enough to produce a barely noticeable back-tilt of your head as you silently acknowledge my mild cleverness. As the title freely admits, I'm not this guy!

But what Fishgrease and I, and I suspect all the rest of you reading this, have in common is that we love coming to this site. So please, one last time I'll ask you to subscribe and/or donate to Daily Kos. Isn't this what the war on Christmas is all about? ;)

Seriously though, I hope all of you have a wonderful, joyous, and healthy holiday season!

PS-Boo-hoo Boehner!

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from Rescue?
Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary?
(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?

  •  Your styles may be completely different, but I (13+ / 0-)

assure you, I will click on your diaries every bit as quickly as Fishgrease's.  You are one of my must-read authors, and part of what makes this site so valuable to me.

  •  HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY CHANUKA, IAN!! (9+ / 0-)

(ok, I will stop shouting now....my bold button doesn't work on this browser, so I must shout across the moors to be heard).

I am doing my part.  My wife and I still are strugling financially ova he'a, but I am donating ALL ROYALTIES from all sales of Aldus Shrugged, from now until January 31, 2013, to dailykos.

I too have found a home here.  I am glad to have you as a neighbor.  The stark differences between your writing and fishgrease's really slapped me in the face, whie reading this diary.  He can't help but curse, while I surmise you probably blush when you curse...at least in print (or perhaps you never curse in print).  Meanwhile, I can see that you have so much to say without trying to be funny at all.  And I cannot even start speaking or typing without thinking of ironic and hopefully funny things.  That diversity is just one reason why I love this place!

By the way, I haven't forgotten about finishing and reviewing your book.  That will happen.

Buy Aldus Shrugged : The Antidote to Ayn Rand, and tear Ayn and the GOP new orifices. ALL ROYALTIES BETWEEN NOW AND JANUARY 31, DONATED TO THIS SITE, DAILYKOS!! @floydbluealdus1

  •  A very nice presentation and well-strategized. (7+ / 0-)

You bring out well the truth about the great variety of personalities and styles in communicating and advocating that's encompassed in the site.  You both and all the other presenters give a picture of the different individuals who are all working toward the common good of the people.

And I appreciate your acknowledgement of individual circumstances at the time which also helps to underscore the importance of our working to try to help people to longer term prosperity.

Perhaps our biggest challenge today is not to teach a man to fish as the saying goes, though it needs to continue, but rather to work on re-stocking the bodies of water, opening them to public fishing rights, and slowing the depletion of the resources.

That I see so many people here devoted to that goal still provides hope for us because it is so pronounced.  That value has great importance also.

My only suggestion for future campaigns since with reduced advertising revenues this may become an annual necessity, unless Soros broadens his scope, then another time of year might be good for the major drive and then if there's not sufficient cushion, and it's an absolute necessity, another late in the year.

  •  Donated AND given a subscription to someone (7+ / 0-)

It's not that I didn't already know that Daily Kos had to be my first stop after I read my email (in part, Ian, because you often post in the morning and I hate to contribute the 216th comment to pretty much ANY diary) but the response of the Kos community to my recent and ongoing bereavement taught me that this here blog has become part of my life and that a few hundred of you are more my family than any of my living relatives are.

I'm staying for the community, but the politics are important (um, crucial) too.

-7.75, -8.10; Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? . . . and respect the dignity of every human being.

  •  Oh here you are! (3+ / 0-)

I was looking for you at 9:00 AM Pacific. lol.

Thanks for writing and here is the list for any late readers like me:

The community has started a list of names of people who don't have subscriptions. We are gradually finding generous donors to buy them subscriptions. This list will live in the New Day series every morning at 7:30 AM Pacific. You can send a Kosmail to me, navajo to add a name or let us know you've purchased a suscription for someone.

    Subscription/Donor List

Admit it. We all love being here and you know you always need to tip your waitress. If you can't contribute financially, help us make the process easier for those who can by assisting.

Help us find users who need subscriptions. Help connect them with Kossack Donors.

I want a prescription subscription to Daily Kos!
