I wrote a few diaries this last political season about the condoms in porn issue and efforts to get it on to the ballot, efforts to keep it off the Los Angeles city elections ballot, and then the fact that it ended up on the countywide ballot, as Measure B, even after AHF had accomplished its initial goals with a deal with the L.A. City Council. My most widely shared and read diaries were on the lack of progressive framing around Measure B by opponents of the measure and a diary that talked numbers and found parallels between the condoms in porn ballot measure and the amendments ginned up in MN to feed red meat to the conservative side in the culture wars...
I was even in Los Angeles for awhile early in 2012, trying to see what common cause occupy might have with adult entertainers and their fans, if occupy style organizing was one way to address their struggles, and made a proposal (which was adopted) at Occupy Venice Beach that opposed the LA City Council's deal to try to appease AHF, and ostensibly save money by removing the ballot measure in from the city ballot in the June primary: OccupyVenice for democracy, against expected LA City Council move to stop condoms in porn referendum based on cost.
Then I got distracted by my political obligations to elect more and better democrats in Minnesota, and haven't had time to revisit the issue and study what happened with the campaigns, the voting, and now the implementation of the measure as adopted.
Because I remain interested, if also confused about what happened and why, I've decided to create a documentary about it and really investigate it, so I've launcehed a kickstarter project: Why Was Measure B on the L.A. County Ballot in 2012?
I would love to have your support, advice, and if you work in the industry, work for it's opponent AHF, or live in Los Angeles County and wrestled with your decision to vote for or against this measure.
