Just a message I posted on Facebook this afternoon...

There are some people who want to do away with guns altogether, yes. However, the extreme view is not going to be the rule of the land in the USA, for various social and economic factors. Screaming about small changes only makes one tend to look like the other extreme.

If we want to get the country together, we have to have reasonable discussion, and letting the extreme left loonies and the extreme right wackos screaming on both sides does no good except to puff up paranoia.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Folks who have been accused of domestic violence prohibited?

Here's a big one that hardly anyone really comprehends:
Mandate that any purchaser that falls under Federal jurisdiction MUST pass an FBI background check?
    DONE. THAT IS LAW.
Let me rephrase that in case the first time wasn't clear enough:
Would you like it so that the federal government requires a background check be done on EVERY transfer that falls under federal jurisdiction?
Guess what - THAT'S ALREADY DONE!

Fucking hell, the Feds already have a blanket background check required to be done on everyone that it can touch - and the NRA SUPPORTED THAT! And yet people continue to mindlessly flog the idea of a federal background check requirement. Seeing it is like watching some idiot pushing on a light switch crying "turn on please it's too dark to read" when the light is already on, and the problem is the idiot has the book under the sheets.

When are people going to stop getting their edu-ma-cashuns about guns from hollywood special effects computer rooms and from propaganda? Is it any wonder why a number of folks will look at the continued whine for "reasonable restrictions" or "reasonable regulations" and simply dismiss the whiner as just another ignorant tool of propaganda, not even worthy of the effort?

Seriously, getting it to sink in that the Feds already have blanket regulations, that the short-circuit isn't at the gun regulation fuse but is rather at the social-funding-timebomb fuse... Well that's just about how hard it is to get it to sink into a right winger's head that supply side economics is fundamentally flawed in that people don't create a job just because they have money in their pocket.

It's safe to trust a sane person with the keys to nuclear weapons, but it's not safe to trust an insane person with the stuff in the kitchen.
