I haven't posted a diary for awhile ( taking time off after the election I guess)....but I feel that I have to post something today about the dreary reaction of some of my co-workers to Obama's announcement today on gun control.....it's disappointing to say the least...more after the fold.....
I work with some people who are just in love with guns! It's a new experience for me becasue I have never been in such close proximity to real gun lovers before. We've had our arguments and discussions before.. They have been amicable enough, no frothing at the mouth like that one dude on you tube. Aside from our disagreements on guns, they are very nice guys and I like them on a personal basis.
BUT they are just dead set against any regulations concerning their guns, and I can't make them see a cause and effect relationship between guns in the home and violent gun deaths in which we lead by far any other so-called advanced nations.. Personally I just can't see why anyone would want to have a gun, unless you are an avid hunter. Guns are designed for one purpose only......TO KILL OTHER PEOPLE
But these guys talk in such an an admiring tone about their guns like other guys talk about their cars, or a boat they might have. And their reaction to Obama's announcement today??? They are running around trying to buy assault rifles before any ban goes into effect. I had a manger call into our office frantically asking one of our gun lovers, where should he go and what should he do to circumvent any ban....
I just asked these guys today , point blank...Why do you think you have to have a gun or an assault weapon in your home? And I finally got an answer that I think pretty much defines the gun mentality.....They need it for protection, from any bad guy that might want to break into your home.....but it goes beyond that..........These guys told me the govt. has automatic weapons, so I NEED TO HAVE THE SAME
FIREPOWER
So there it is finally.....the paranoia, that if the government comes for you , you have to be prepared...( and just for the record I don't live in the South, I live in San Diego)
A thousand Newtown massacres is not going to change this mindset....it is deeply ingrained.....and very discouraging......
