The Daily Bucket is a place where we post and exchange our observations about what is happening in the natural world in our neighborhood. Bugs, buds, birds - each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
Wednesday, during one of my brief forays outside, I heard a scrubbie, aka Western Scrub Jay. Upon reflection, I realized that I had not heard one in some time. This seems wierd, as I'll explain below the orange bird's nest.

Castro Valley, 1/16/2013 - Scrubbie

In my area, the Western Scrub Jay isn't migratory. I don't think that any of the various subspecies are actually migratory, unless some of them do the vertical migration thing, seasonally shifting from valleys to mountains and back.

For those unfamiliar with them, scrubbies are not quiet. They make their presence known. Though I haven't been outside that much, I do get out a bit daily, and I have to let the master of the household out of and back in the front door many times daily, pausing each time to look and listen. I am relatively sure that i would have heard them if there were any scdrubbiesws around, but I have not. I haven't even heard that one again. Yet, they are resident and I can guarantee that there are times that they are definitely here, in multiples even.  A mystery.

OK now, how about you

This is where you rport what you have been seeing and hearing, or not, as the case may be, in your area. Please make sure to give us a rough idea of where that area is. Thank you.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
