So some folks are claiming that the shooting in connecticut was staged. Some folks are claiming that Hurricane Sandy's swath of destruction was created by a conspiracy. Meanwhile, some folks are claiming that any attempt to control citizens' access to guns is the next step to a fascist regime.

Yankee ingenuity triupmhs! Let's combine these problems and form a single solution to both. Follow me below the squiggle.

Anyone who espouses a Truther conspiracy theory should be automatically and categorically excluded from possession of a gun. Period, no recourse.

This sets up a perfect Catch-22 type scenario where anyone who claims a conspiracy theory, such as that the federal government intends to confiscate all guns in private hands, is barred from having a gun. Anyone who denies such theories is allowed to have a gun.

You may say that Truthers will lie about their beliefs in order to preserve their gun rights. However, it is well known that psychotic people cannot lie, that only as they recover and become more enmeshed in reality can they tell an untruth. In mental hospitals the key for a patient to obtain a weekend pass, for instance, is to deny his/her illusions; even if he/she is still having them, the fact of being able to lie about them means sufficient improvement to go home for the weekend.

Then the rest of us can get back to real problems like climate change, rather than being threatened by whackos.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Is that the lunatics who would actually use a gun with mental health issues don't seek mental health care.

Meanwhile, most of the people who do seek mental health care deal with real issues that make them way more likely to be victims of violent crimes than to commit them.

I listen to people rant about the government is coming to get them, and I think: these are the lunatics who if a mental health test was part of the component would be right out.
