Citizens! Arm yourselves! If you want, you can buy yourself
THIS beauty! She fires .45 ACP rounds and comes with a 30 round magazine! You can even get a 100 round drum mag if you like!
ACT FAST!
But wait... maybe not that fast... why would you need that? Has anybody ever gone hunting with a Tommy gun? Is having that strapped to your back necessary for warding off muggers? Do you need a 100 round magazine to defend your home? Obviously the first two questions are facetious, but the third one would be answered "yes" by a lot of people.
The Government, in all its ineffective bumbling and inability to solve the most basic of human problems (a commonly coinciding view), is still capable of outrageous tyranny that starts when they disarm the public! This is a fringe voice but it is a very loud one. Disregarding the fact that the military has fighter jets and smart bombs (good luck with that tommy gun!), and that the military is a volunteer citizen force that would be hard-pressed to start oppressing their own countrymen, disregarding the fact that a huge number of military individuals are NRA members....
I apologize for that outburst. Let's observe another view, perhaps one a little more sane. According to Gallup, 54% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the NRA. They claim to represent huntsmen and enthusiasts, after all! But wait... their top leaders advocate that fringe view I just mentioned... huh. With a board staffed by gun-happy celebrities, Republicans with questionable pasts, and at least one CEO of a major gun manufacturer, what is their interest as an organization?
Much like PETA's overzealous leadership, and any advocacy group of significant size, the crazies are few but gather at the base. Alarmist views drive membership, and when you're an alarmist on every front, you become fanatical. Painting a picture of a tyrannical government that wants to crush your rights might not hit home with everybody, but those that like their guns will at least take notice.
A rather extreme Government-As-Threat view has made itself known in recent years by way of the tea party and their increasingly unpopular candidates. The NRA holds this same view, and avidly promote unchecked weapons proliferation.
Additionally, the tired assertion of gun control "only hurting law-abiding gun owners" in such a way to imply that criminals will have bigger guns than us is ridiculous.
If you can't manufacture a kind of rifle, it makes it impossible to buy it.
But that's more for another time~
