Q-tip's excellent diary has been weighing heavy on my mind today, with the spectre a Republican president who can't win a popular vote winning every electoral college contest via rigged electoral vote allocation

I kinda lost it on FB today
after posting this excellent article on FB from the center for American Progress (lamenting the loss of representative democracy) - I got the usual response from my right wing friends -
- the old process was unfair to rural voters - this makes it more fair - how can you object
- isn't your support the the popular vote compact the same thing?
couple thoughts came to mind out of that exchange
1. - The Founders wanted to prevent mob rule - my takeway from that is if it's a choice between mob rule and rule by the illegitimate minority party who can't win an election by the popular vote, I'll take mob rule
2. - One friend just suggested maybe it would be better if the Red states broke away - and somewhere inside of me, I just sorta snapped
"I'm a big fan of letting the red states go too - they consume a lot more in tax revenue then they put in and then bitch about overspending and wanting to take away social security and medicare - let them go form the redneck states of America with their low education rates, high obesity rates, their non-union jobs making barely sustainable wages, and let the blue states prosper in peace"
I know this is defeatist thinking (and as one friend pointed out, stereotyping - not every red state is Mississippi, after all) - But right now, despite our victories, I see defeat on the horizon and I'm not quite sure where we can go from here if these pass in those 6 states
I'd like to get Kos's input on this - I don't feel like we're being concern trolls worrying about it or wanting to address it - this is an idea that is already starting to go thru in states like Virginia, and I worry that long term, it will gain legitimacy in FL, OH, and other states where Republicans have already established that they're willing to allow "legal" voter fraud to continue if it helps Republican causes
