if the majority leader in the Senate just makes nicey nicey with the Turtle and filibuster reform goes down the toilet.

I am so sick of the pathetic games played in Washington which disenfranchise the electorate who made it EXTREMELY CLEAR that they rejected the Republican agenda, and want our elected representatives to do our will.

Harry Reid should be primaried by a progressive in Nevada (and with the huge union movement in Vegas I'm sure there's someone out there) and get out of the Senate where he is a Mormon embarassment.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    DID NOT HAVE THE VOTES

He needed 51 votes for substantive reform, and he couldn't reach 50.

All this sorry episode does is underline, in bold, the need for Better Democrats.

We made a start in the Senate, there is more to do.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

favor ending the 60 vote requirement, it was cited in a diary yesterday. Seems like he was one of the votes he couldn't get.

Agreed fully on the implications for the party though.

When they don't have the votes.

Listen to what he said when he thought he did :)

It's what David Waldman refers to as the "inside game"

It sucks, it's disingenuous, but it is how they operate in the Senate.

but I fear we will remain Democrats.

The only way we would have known for sure would have been for Harry to let the vote go forward.  Even if it lost - the American people would win, because we would know the truth.

      •  That would have satisfied us (0+ / 0-)

but in the Senate, at least in private, they would have crucified him for it. Even his friends would have been pissed if he had put them on the spot like that.

It is his personal "nuclear option", to be used only when it might possibly swing maybe one vote. And even then he would think long and hard.

They do not embarrass each other in that club, it is one of the rules of the game.

That is why we ended up with secret holds.

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

    Mormon embarassment
Change the wording, and I will remove the Hide Rate

      was wrong with that?

Not supporting it.  Just want to know if my feelings on this makes sense.

that "Harry Reid is a Mormon embarrassment"

Just imagine, for a moment, that Harry Reid was black.

        See how that works?

Perfectly fine to accuse him of being an embarrassment, although I would disagree, but you can't add the additional attack.

Being "Mormon" is not an embarrassment, any more than being gay, or a person of color, or an atheist.

Is that what you were feeling?

I hope that the quality of debate will improve,
but I fear we will remain Democrats.

Diariast was trying to say he was an embarrassment to Mormons?

then the Diarist has had ample opportunity to simply say so. Although I am not sure quite how that reasoning would fit the Diary :)

I have offered to lift the Hide Rate.

I thought the comment was awful, but I also wanted the author to understand that I was perfectly amenable to either an explanation or a minor edit.

It seems that neither of us will get an answer to that.

                  it will be updated later.

In this case, given the percentage of Mormons in Nevada, this is a benefit to them.  I am just not sure what his religion has to do with this issue.

I'm Xtian so I try to comment when someone blames Christianity in general.  I was wondering the same here.

I can say specific reasons why I think West or Steele or Cain are embarrassments to Black people.  But I would only point it out as necessary.
