Whereas this is supposedly a reality based community, I though we could take a closer
look at what Senator Feinstein calls “an up hill battle’’ and (cough cough) "the hardest of the hard."
Dog knows it's not easy for the typical 'moran' to count to 538 much less 60 (Senate) or 217 (House).
I was one of many Demo's who refused to believe the 2010 midterms would not turn out to be OK for our party.
Feinstein claims she can get AWB2 passed because polls (that may or may not prove as accurate as Gallup) show broad based support for a ban on such weapons.
Ignoring the 60 / filibuster scenario for the moment, lets just see where 50 (+ Biden) votes may or may not come from:
Im going to start with what I guess to be an extremely biased supporter of gun control:
Bloomberg (dot com); assuming he maintains a modicum of editorial oversight.
Mr. Bloomberg believes in gun control enough to finance probably the biggest anti gun group out there. mayors against illegal guns
From Bloomberg
At least six of the 55 senators in the Democratic caucus have expressed skepticism or outright opposition to a ban, the review found. That means Democrats wouldn’t have a 51-vote majority to pass the measure, let alone the 60 needed to break a Republican filibuster to bring it to a floor vote.
--------------
The five Democratic senators from traditionally pro-gun states who have expressed skepticism about the bill are Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana, Mark Begich of Alaska, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Independent Senator Angus King of Maine, who caucuses with Democrats, also said he opposes a ban.
Maine Senator Susan Collins, a Republican who supported similar legislation in 2004, has indicated she is unlikely to back the proposed ban in its current form.
Supposedly there's one Republican't Senator from Illinois who will vote for the new & improved AWB2
Now on to another not particularly gun friendly publication
The New York Times
Of far greater concern are Democrats who are up for re-election in 2014.
Including…
Senator Al Franken of Minnesota
Senator Mark Udall of Colorado
Senator Kay Hagan of North Caroline (home of Remington Arms)
Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire (home of Sturm, Ruger and Sig Sauer.)
Senator Mark Warner Virginia
Senator Mary Landrieu Louisiana
Senator Tim Johnson S Dakota
Senator Mark Pryor Arkansas
The Bloomberg link above used the artful phrase
senators from traditionally pro-gun states
So lets consider 2 Dem Senators from other 'gun friendly' states
--Senator Harry Reid Nevada
--Senator Bernie Sanders Vermont
The Hill seams to agree with our very own RKBA Democrats
What the elite media in New York and Washington do not understand is that in much of America, seen by some as “flyover country,” owning guns is a way of life.
Red-state America cannot stand being lectured by wealthy Northeastern liberals about guns, when most of them have never fired one, cannot tell the difference between semi-automatic and automatic
This gun-control push has the potential to awaken the sleeping giant of the electorate — the same silent majority that swung the 2010 midterms in historic fashion to Republicans, with a 63-seat gain in the House and six in the U.S. Senate. Apart from the Senate, the honest truth is that no legislation near what the White House has proposed can pass the Republican-controlled House, where Republicans have 234 members.
Speaking of –the House of Reps- Whistling past the graveyard
which leads us to the House of Representatives.
I don’t expect Republicans to do anything to help our president accomplish anything
Four short years ago, when President Obama asked AG holder to look into passing a new AWB, I wrote about the push back in the house.
Today in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, 65 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Congressman Mike Ross (D-AR), expressed their opposition to the reinstatement of the 1994 ban on semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines.
Dems have lost many of these 65 seats since then, if there is a single one of these districts represented today, by an anti gunnie/2nd amendment type, I'm unaware of it.
Comments, PLEASE let us know if your Senator or Representative has gone on record as for or against AWB2. I'm especially interested in blue state Republicans.
When our President first announced they'd try & pass this type of legislation again, my 1st impression was it would squeak through the Senate, but not the house. Today, I'm afraid it won't even come up for a vote.
In the hugg/puff link above DiFi said
Reid promised her she could try & attach AWB, as an amendment, to whatever other gun legislation that does get voted on.
Only one thing is guaranteed, both side will regroup to fight another day.
Right to Keep and Bear Arms is a DKos group of second amendment supporters who have progressive and liberal values. We don't think that being a liberal means one has to be anti-gun. Some of us are extreme in our second amendment views (no licensing, no restrictions on small arms) and some of us are more moderate (licensing, restrictions on small arms.) Moderate or extreme or somewhere in between, we hold one common belief: more gun control equals lost elections. We don't want a repeat of 1994. We are an inclusive group: if you see the Second Amendment as safeguarding our right to keep and bear arms individually, then come join us in our conversation. If you are against the right to keep and bear arms, come join our conversation. We look forward to seeing you, as long as you engage in a civil discussion.
As always, if you're interested in joining RKBA, message
