Try listening to the "assault rifle in every home" arguments on the same day you read about the outlaws with machine guns who are running Venezuela while Hugo Chavez lies dying in Cuba. ("Slumlord" by Jon Lee Anderson in the January New Yorker). You may begin to imagine these fervent pro-gun crusaders marching up your driveway after some terrible calamity to claim your food and water for the righteous.

Its true that if a person stumbled into the vision of a post-apocalyptic film-maker or gun-maker, a machine gun would be handy. Our government is shady but I would still rather give the machine guns to a well-trained, publicly accountable militia (such as police and national guard) than a bunch of fearful, self-appointed people. Exactly who are they planning to protect in the case of social breakdown? They will become the roving bands of outlaws that they say they want to protect themselves from.

Do we need a well-appointed, democratically controlled local militia to protect us from the second-amendment militants?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    Uhm... I think so.

On a more serious note, what would most likely happen (looking at similar situations around the world) is that we'd see the rise of warlords.  I'd like a government to protect me from those.

And I've been following the recent gun restriction hearings and legislative proposals fairly closely, as well as people's reactions. Where are the "assault rifle in every home" arguments you've been seeing all over the place?

For the record, I certainly don't see any use in arming every household with an assault rifle, or for that matter, arming any household that doesn't want to be regardless of firearm type. I am also fine with the current law which makes acquiring an assault rifle or any other automatic weapon practically impossible. I'm not aware of any major outcry from pro-gun ownership folks to suddenly make assault rifles or machine guns unrestricted and unregistered for all.

Let me close with a fun technicality: if you're male and under 45, you already are a member of a militia. Per US law, every man between the age of 17 and 44 is automatically part of the reserve militia. If you ever served in the Armed Forces, you're part of that reserve militia up until 65. Many states have similar provisions.
