Oh good gravy, here I've forgotten to post an Open Thread! Sorry about that folks. In some time zone, somewhere, it's the right time for coffee.

None for me thanks, I've got the caffeine jitters already.

Well, perhaps the usual opening line should be modified to "what are you digesting?"

Yeah, I got dumped on tonight. It's the joy of self-employment. Just about the time I was supposed to be putting up the Coffee Hour for my darling Prophets I got an email that threw me off balance.

You see, most of my income comes from drawing storyboards that advertising agencies use as presentational materials to sell ideas to their clients. It's like a comic strip version of a television commercial.

And late Wednesday I got a call from a guy telling me I was recommended to him by a man, a friend of mine, I've worked with in the jolly ad biz for about 15 years -- which is a little disingenuous because my friend is actually his employer.

Well, the guy asked if I'd have time to draw around 20 storyboard frames by Saturday. And I thought, "hey, 20 pictures in two and a half days? Luxury compared to what I'm used to-- ".

Well, 20 pictures turned out to be 30 rather complicated pictures.

And then around usual Coffee Hour time I got a message adding four more frames...

Oof, so sorry about the delay getting your coffee to you this evening-- I'm going through the sleep-deprivation thing ... and spacial distortion is not conducive to productive drawing.

Yeah, about 4 hours of sleep over three days.

It's a strange business I'm in. It's either no work or no sleep.

I will however, take it as a positive sign that the economy is on the mend.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

I worked on the media side of advertising for two decades and I had no idea people sent their storyboards out. I thought, silly me, that that was part of what the art department did.

Even on my side, though, I know about the reasonable deadline that turns out to be more complicated than you expected.  I hope you get paid a LOT for this.

      Heh.

Once when I was knocking on doors introducing myself to various agencies in town I happened to stop in to one agency on the day they had just hired a young man to become their in-house scribbler. He was wandering the halls with a stunned smile on his face and a the Employee's Corporate Handbook clutched to his chest. He'd be handling all their storyboard work. Not the best day for me to stop by. It at least used to be pretty rare for agencies here to have in-house illustrators.

For a couple of years there I was such a frequent visitor to Leo Burnett, Prague that one of the receptionists invited me to her birthday party.

I think most people thought I worked there. Some nights I even helped lock up.

And about a half hour ago I called to see if everything was alright with the work I'd just turned in and was promptly asked to draw one more picture. That's what kills me. He refuses to budge the deadline despite the added work-- I warn him that the quality of the work might suffer or that frames might not get completed on time-- and I call a couple of hours after the deadline and without blinking he has me send him another picture. In other words, I could have slept last night.

I also hope I get paid a lot for this! Prices are fairly standardized here though. Unfortunately, they haven't changed in 15 years.

Coffee was not only stale, but by this morning had grown cold. I just brewed up a fresh pot. ;-p

      for cold coffee Scott!

      Lovely to see you!

I've gone past caffeine and am resorting to my favorite music on my "Play it loud!" playlist gunned up to synapse shaking volume levels and carefully captured to rattle around within my cranium by fluffy headphones.

Oof, I was just about ready to spend some time studying the capillary system of my eyelids when I got an email - no call, just an email! asking for-- guess what? Two more pictures!

And a promise that this project is finally done.

      We'll see ...

I was just going to put some ice in my coffee and have iced coffee but they haven't gotten around to fixing the ice machine in my freezer yet so I nuked it instead. ;-)

I've been working on space art for the last few days. I'll show the results in tomorrow's Sunday Brunch. This one however just sprang up in my mind which I take it is the result of too much cold medicine and not the fact that I am a little on the strange side. It is called Neptune's Palace.

Iced coffee - and your art.

This piece is particularly strange. I like strange. It's like looking at a place where gravity just isn't all that important.

I'll try to drop by your Sunday Brunch post once it's up.

Thanks for stopping by and brightening the place up a bit. An open thread needs some pictures.

Somebody get Captain Kirk in a diving suit to go explore that place ...
