UPDATED 3:56 PM PT: we are over half way there!  zwoof just let me know that the new total is $2,257.69!  we CAN do this!

wouldn't it be awesome for alicia's voice to open it's doors on monday knowing they will be there for another year!

half way done!  you kossacks are awesome!

back to the original diary now...

friday, our own zwoof wrote an incredibly moving diary about alicia's voice - the organization established to help those who are victims of domestic violence.  in her memory, her mother started took that grief and vowed to not let that voice be silenced - and, in the last six years, over 1400 women in the toledo, ohio area have been the beneficiaries of that effort.

sadly, it looked as though that voice would be silenced due to the recession and tough times that saw donations lessening - but the community stepped forward to let people know how important her message was, is.

we started a fundraiser to gather the money to keep the doors open another year and we have over 1/3 of those funds within a day.  we are not alone in wanting alicia's voice to succeed.  zwoof told me that the folks in bowling green are also kicking in to try to keep her voice reaching out to those who need.

please come with me to the next step beneath the orange swirl...

why are these diaries important?

it is simple.  here on daily kos, we are a community. we come together when a need arises. we ARE together when it counts!  we may hold onto our differences passionately, but when times are tough, the orange comes through!

i know times are hard for many - for me, too.  but some things are worth re-finagling finances a bit to take one more consolidated trip, make one less stop for coffee and make a pot at home (that's MY vice - coffee).  i can tweak an already narrow budget to find a bit to forward on for something that matters. for something that really makes a difference - i can find that bit of hidden change.

if each person just found one dollar or two - collectively, it adds up - and with the number of people who come here - people with generous hearts - that single dollar is as valuable as the larger gift when added to the collective will.

we faced down horrific challenges politically last year - citizen's united is an insult to "citizens" everywhere - it is the source of blood money that is used for harm - but it could not beat back the TRUE "citizen's united" to fight those that would take away our voices.

let's put that effort to use again - one organization at a time - to combat that which harms innocents.  one day, perhaps, our government will be truly ours again and we won't need to do these funding drives.  one can dream - one can hope.

but in the immediate future, we have one voice - that of alicia - that is in danger of being lost. i am asking each of you to look to see if there is a way you can help.  if finances are not there, perhaps by sharing this on facebook or telling your friends, they can help.

let's make sure that alicia's voice keeps being heard - please, if you can, join us in this effort!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
