Chuck Hagel, who had nothing to do with Benghazi.
While the vote on Chuck Hagel's nomination to be secretary of defense is still expected to happen this week, it continues to hit snags, not limited to the
village idiots in the committee hearing. He's also being filibustered,
but don't call it a filibuster by Sen. James Inhofe and the
Bopsy twins of Sens. McCain and Graham.
It's important to keep in mind that this filibuster threat isn't actually about Hagel. It's about something Hagel had absolutely nothing to do with: Benghazi. Huckleberry Graham is demanding that he gets a play-by-play of President Obama's actions on the day of the attack. Why? Outside of some conspiracy theory being cooked up that somehow Obama's negligence of the situation emboldened the terrorists, the only plausible answer is Graham's political future. He's trying to ward off a teabagger primary challenge for 2014, and the best way to do that is to act as crazy as they are. McCain is apparently just along for the ride, and he's bringing others with him.
So the confirmation vote for Hagel is pending. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has flatly stated he won't honor any Republican holds on Hagel's nomination and he'll to bring the vote to the floor. But to do so, he still has to get agreement from McConnell to do it. And if McConnell wants to (and so far there's not much indication he feels otherwise) he can force a cloture vote. In other words, so much for filibuster "reform." Republicans can still blow up the Senate just because they feel like it.
This has to end. Tell Harry Reid so. Sign our petition urging him to re-open the process of filibuster reform in the Senate.
