I think we should stop funding cancer research. There’s really no point to it. Sure, every year lots of people die from cancer. But cancer isn’t the biggest killer. At least not in the United States. That title belongs to heart disease.
Heart disease kills more people in the US than cancer. So we need to stop funding cancer research. In fact, we really shouldn’t be talking about funding cancer research in the first place because it won’t be effective anyway. Seriously, don’t talk about it. It’s wrong to have a serious debate about it.
Hmmm... Now that I think about it, that seems like a really stupid idea.
I mean, there's no reason we can't work to fight BOTH things, right? Can't reasonable, intelligent people discuss ways to combat more than one disease?
Then why do people keep saying we don't need gun control because poverty (or drugs, or car crashes, etc.) kills more people?
_____
FOR THE RECORD:
I'm not against reasonable gun ownership. I'm not against reasonable gun control.
I'm against stupidity masquerading as wisdom, and simplistic excuses masquerading as rational discourse.
I've heard many simplistic excuses for why we can't or shouldn't have a SERIOUS NATIONAL TALK about gun control. For example, "If we just armed the teachers there wouldn't be a problem!"
I am attempting to tackle these stupid excuses one by one, and will continue to do so as long as the ideas continue to present themselves.
That's all. Make of it what you will.
