Whose values, Mr. Cruz? Amerca's? Or Moscow's?
I'm a student of political history. I fear the Ted Cruz thing is going to play out more or less the way the first half of the Joe McCarthy tragedy played out. To wit:
• First Cruz makes a very specific, utterly insane smear against a Democrat (or a political enemy). By specific, I mean that a key (as pointed out by Rachel Maddow) method of McCarthyism -- the thing that makes it sticky is the specificity. He didn't just encounter some Marxist college professors at Harvard -- he encountered TWELVE (exactly! He counted 'em!) Marxist college professors dedicated to the overthrow of America by force and violence. Chuck Hagel didn't just accept money from North Koreans -- he 'may have' accepted $200,000!
• Then -- outraged lefties deny it (Harvard responded that they had no idea what he was talking about).
• Then -- before people can catch their breath (or process the denial) we're on to next smear.
We need to change up this script and play offense. Here's how...

The way to take on a Ted Cruz is to get right in his grill, and stay there. Get him back on his heels. Use his strength against him.

In the case of Harvard...

"Senator Cruz, America needs some answers. You say you encountered twelve -- TWELVE hard-core, America-hating, government-overthrowing Marxist professors at Harvard. AND YET...as far as we can tell, and please correct us on this...you NEVER EVER reported these Professors to anyone! You made NO ATTEMPT to stop them from this vile practice! Were you not opposed to Communism then? Did you have no responsibility to students to come after you? Won't you name them NOW, in case some of them are still out there poisoning the minds of our young? Isn't that your responsibility?

"Senator Cruz, these are very serious charges. America wants answers. A Senator who sits on his hands when active subversion of the American political system is occurring at an elite University is simply not acceptable.

"As for your charges about Senator Hagel and the mysterious $200,000, you seem to have some 'inside information' on this. I mean, no Senator would launch an indiscriminate smear, especially with a very specific dollar amount mentioned, without very solid information. Your charges indicate either a secret information source, or a coziness with the North Koreans that would make your status as a United States Senator extremely problematic. Where did you come by this information, Senator? What is your back-channel to the North Koreans? These are very troubling questions, Senator Cruz. Answers, please."

The only way to deal with bullies is to take them on head-on. This can be done in the context of humor (Stewart, Colbert) but its more effective if its done by someone with some clout.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

ABSOLUTE PROOF that Senator Ted Cruz IS, and HAS BEEN for his entire adult life, an avowed HOMO SAPIEN!! In the privacy of his home he has practiced numismatics, and there are witnesses to vouch that he introduced BOTH of his daughters to podiatry at a very young age - and CONTINUES TO FORCE THEM TO PRACTICE IT TO THIS DAY!!!

America, can we afford to have this man at the highest levels of government?

  •  McCarthy was the head of (10+ / 0-)

a committee, which he was able to turn into a very powerful position. What he said mattered. Cruz is a freshman. His words will get noticed and the more outrageous stuff he says will be in the papers but unless he actually says things that are true, he won't have any impact (other than that people will pay less and less attention to what he says over time). You can't just say things that are factually wrong over and over again without people realizes that you are not a serious person. That rule applies whether you are on the left or right.

IMO it's just fine that he says that Harvard professors are Communists, or that Chuck Hagel is on the payroll of North Korea. It's fine. He's playing to Texas-based Tea Partiers, that is his primary intended audience. And he may be nailing it for them. But he's costing himself and his Party sorely every time he opens his mouth. So why are we even thinking about trying to shut it?

These goofy-fucks like Cruz say over and over, Americans want.  The fact of the matter is we don't want that which Cruz and all the other GOP goofy-fucks want.

We don't want assault weapons, we don't want high capacity magazines, we want fair pay for like work, we want women protected from violence, we want control on banks who are stealing money from the little guys, we want goofy-fuck conservative GOPers to take an interest in their constituents rather than wealthy donors.

We don't want wackjobs like Cruz.

  •  Cruz and the "Friends of Hamas" LIE (8+ / 0-)

Surely, when the honorable US Senate reconvenes and votes again on cloture for the Hagel nomination, the Democrats will raise hell about the utterly bogus smear against Hagel in the Arms Service Committee meeting where he was directly challenged by Cruz for taking funds from "Friends of Hamas."

I don't even want to think of this purposeful GOP smear of a decorated veteran's reputation being swept under the rug as if it does not matter.

  •  It's easy to say "He's making a fool of himself" (7+ / 0-)

but, as we have seen, if you lie with conviction, and keep repeating it, someone will believe you. There are gullible people, and some of them are unbalanced. This is not a good combination.

If you let Cruz get away with this stuff, it emboldens him, and other filberts, and increases the likelihood of inflaming the easily led. So, yes, absolutely he should be challenged.

  •  Actually Cruz said Hagel "May Have" Taken Money... (6+ / 0-)

from North Korea or Saudi Arabia.  Rand Paul was the guy who said he heard Hagel was associated w/ "Friends of Hamas".  He was on an interview w/ Hugh Hewitt, a right wing radio host, & Paul said he was going to check into the "Friends of Hamas" group.

That ought to be quite a feat since the group never existed.

Cruz seems obsessed w/ Communists.  Interesting, since his father was a one time supporter of Fidel Castro.  But that's OK, because his staff is now saying Cruz father made a mistake.....all is forgiven if you are Cruz dad.  In the meantime, Cruz continues his Commie hunt.

these Tea Baggers when they bear false witness against anyone they are attacking with malice instead of facts.  Cruz and Paul are obssessed with making phony baseless  charges that sound credible on the surface because they are so good at delivering them with a sense of sincere outrage.  The media needs to follow up with them and get real hard nosed when they try to shuck and jive their way out of them without a credible explanation or perish the thought, apology.   I can't believe Cruz thinks communists are hiding under the bed somewhere in Amerca, both he and Paul are riding the Tiger of the Tea Baggers, be careful gentlemen, that Tiger may eat you.

Cruz is a master at it:
While at Princeton, he competed for the American Whig-Cliosophic Society's Debate Panel as one of North America's top-ranked parliamentary debaters, winning the top speaker award at both the 1992 U.S. National Debating Championship and the 1992 North American Debating Championship.[13] In 1992, he was named Speaker of the Year and Team of the Year (with his debate partner, David Panton) by the American Parliamentary Debate Association.[13] In 1991 he and his partner came in second to Austan Goolsbee and partner David Gray. Cruz was also a semi-finalist at the 1995 World Universities Debating Championship.

etc. in the senate. After all, teabagger senate candidates are arguably the single most reason for Democrats holding the senate in 2010 and 2012, and there are similar possibilities in 2014 in Kentucky, Georgia, and Maine. Couldn't have done it without them.

From this diary, I only know what you said about what he said. I despise Cruz and he probably said something idiotic, but where is the link?

by his spokeswoman to...The Blaze - owned by Glenn Beck:

      http://www.newyorker.com/...

Senator Ted Cruz has responded to The New Yorker’s report that he accused Harvard Law School of having had “twelve” Communists who “believed in the overthrow of the U.S. Government” on its faculty when he attended in the early nineties. Cruz doesn’t deny that he said this; instead, through his spokesman, he says he was right: Harvard Law was full of Communists.

His spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told The Blaze website that the “substantive point” in Cruz’s charge, made in a speech in 2010, was “was absolutely correct.”

        Thanks for the link.

So here's my response: I think it's good to have college professors who are Communists or Libertarians or Lutherans or Mormons or feminists or Dadaists or people who watch TV (or don't). Structuralists. Platonists. Neo-conservatives. Chomsky fans. Atheists. Whatever.

I'm a big fan of liberal arts colleges. College should teach you how to think. I've learned a lot from arguing with professors I don't agree with. It's all about the exchange of ideas, right? It's all about learning how to think.

Either the professor convinces you he/she is right or you figure out why you are right.

Academic freedom is closely related to freedom of speech.

If colleges aren't allowed to discuss ideas, we might as well just shut them all down and turn them into training centers for nurses and engineers and managers. You know, the practical professions.
