Solid science education is the best inoculation against ignorance.
The Inoculation Project, founded in 2009 by hyperbolic pants explosion, is a group of Kossacks who gather weekly to combat the anti-science push in conservative America by providing direct funding to science and math projects in red state classrooms. Our conduit is DonorsChoose.org, a twelve-year-old organization rated highly by both Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Here's a little introductory video about DonorsChoose. DonorsChoose.org allows you to make direct contributions to specific, vetted projects in public school classrooms, resulting in tremendous and immediate impacts from small dollar donations. Each week, we focus on funding a single small-dollar project at a time, in a traditionally red state classroom and preferably in a high-poverty district.
Look for us every SUNDAY morning at 10 AM ET/ 7 AM PT.

This Week's Main Project
Project: Are Frogs Like Humans?

Resources Needed: assorted dissection materials to successfully complete a dissection unit.
School Poverty Level: High
Location: Northside Intermediate School in Opelika, AL
Total Cost: $433.96
Still Needed: $123.96 Completed! Thank you.
Expires: May 18, 2013

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Shaw:

My Students: Doing dissection with elementary students is a challenge. Working through the understanding of the systems is a fascinating topic for students to investigate in enrichment; where I can extend their scientific studies from the regular classroom. Real dissection will give students hand-on experience

Our school is an intermediate school in Alabama. There are approximately 300 students who attend this school. Enrichment is a pull-out program for students who go through a selection process to receive enrichment services. This is a program that meets the state's requirements for serving our gifted population. I serve approximately 70 students; 3rd graders, 4th graders and 5th graders. Because there is not a curriculum for enrichment, projects are based on student's interest which is taken from an interest inventory given at the beginning of the year. 'The Body' and Science Experiments were at the top of the list. These students are the leaders of tomorrow; they are intelligent, witty, creative, motivated and seek to understand, "why". We are fortunate at our school to provide opportunities beyond the regular, rigorous curriculum that will inspire such students to reach for higher career choices in their future.

My Project: With the dissection materials that I am seeking, I will be able to put a scalpel in a student's hand and give them hands-on-experience with dissection of a frog. They will be able to locate the internal organs and investigate the similarities frogs have with humans. In 4th grade, I will use the grasshoppers to investigate the unusual heart that grasshoppers have. In 3rd grade students will study the circulatory system and will end their unit of study investigating the sheep heart to compare what they have learned about the human heart with what they will be able to touch and see with the sheep heart. These experiences will never be forgotten by these students. I want to instill in my students not only an understanding of the organisms, but also a respect for these creatures.

The future of our country will depend on what our students know and understand as they move through our school systems and into our colleges and later into their careers. Through research we have heard that careers associated with STEM will be necessary for the future of our country. What better way for us to prepare our future leaders of tomorrow, then by exposing them to the wonders of the body and the magnificence of the living organisms around us.

COMPLETED! Thank you.
Donations of ANY size DID make a BIG difference!
We try to focus on the main project until it is completely funded, and then move on to the bonus project. If a project doesn't meet its funding goal by its deadline, it dies and any donations to it are referred to their donors to be moved to another project. For that reason, we don't like to split our sometimes limited resources between two open projects. Of course the choice of project to which you donate (if any!) is entirely yours.
Bonus Project #1
When the main project is finished, let's work on this one.
Project: Hands-on Learning with Simple Machines

Resources Needed: nine simple machine/STEM sets to help develop their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
School Poverty Level: High
Location: James A Mulkey Elem School in Geneva, AL
Total Cost: $425.99
Still Needed: $215.99 Completed! Thank you.
Expires: Apr 26, 2013

Teacher's Comments from Mrs. Marley:

My Students: Simple machines were used to build the Egyptian pyramids; my students need these simple machine model sets to build their own pyramid of learning. Please help my students connect to a future where they can envision themselves as engineers, machine designers, inventors, and architects.

These eager young students look forward to closing their textbooks and using their hands to learn about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Many of their parents do not have the resources available to purchase educational kits. Our school is a Title 1 school in a rural area of Alabama. Almost 63% of our students are on free or reduced lunches; please help feed their growing minds.

My Project: These nine simple machine model sets can change a student's future outlook on life. These eight year olds will be able to envision themselves as scientists, technicians, engineers, and mathematicians. They will design and create working models of gears, levers, pulleys, inclined planes, screws, and wheeled vehicles.

Your donation can make a world of difference in a young person's life. Instead of simply learning in a two-dimensional format, they will use their own hands and young minds to create three-dimensional models. They will be actively engaged in learning rather than taking a passive role in their own education.

COMPLETED! Thank you.

Sandy Hook School Fund

Supporting Newtown Teachers is a special, open-ended DonorsChoose project designed to support all teachers in the Newtown, CT, public school system. It remains open to donations through June 30, 2013, at which time the fund will be distributed equally to all teachers in that system, for projects of their choosing. The project was organized by the Connecticut Commissioner of Education and the American Federation of Teachers. We will track it until completion.

Housekeeping

Last week's main project, Environmental Detectives in the River Valley, was completed. Junior High School students in Arkansas will have the materials they need to test soil and water for contaminants.

The bonus project, We Are Digging Our School, was completed wth a Kossack assist. Elementary School students in North Carolina will receive a composter for their campus garden.

In addition, a previous week's bonus project, Transforming Math Class!, was also completed. Elementary School students in Texas will receive a flatbed scanner to create a transformation animation for their math class.

You can see the teachers' thank-you notes at the links above. Many thanks to all contributors!

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
