On February 8, I posted a diary about the possibility of Alicia's Voice, a non-profit citizens group against domestic violence, closing its doors due to lack of funds. At the time, a February 16th scheduled fundraising dinner event had only sold 15 tickets, which meant the organization was going to take a big hit to cover expenses.

After reading my story,
edrie posted an appeal for donations to
Alicia's Voice PayPal account. Immediately, the Daily Kos community responded. Online donations exceeding $3,400 and the increase in local interest generated by the media gave Alicia's Voice the confidence to go ahead with the "big tacky wedding reception" dinner dance.
Ticket sales in the final few days before the event totaled around $14,000. So,...
We are going to keep the doors open one more year!
Alicia's Voice has helped over 1,400 victims of domestic violence since the death of my daughter Alicia in 2007, and is currently putting six women through STNA (state-tested nursing assistant) schooling, with the goal of giving those women a way to support their families when they graduate. The plan is to help educate other women as well, to the extent that funding allows.
