Good Monday Morning Gussacks and welcome to another week-opener installment of GUS.   Today is April 1st which is not only the 92nd day of the year but also April Fools' Day to all you practical pranksters.  I was going to do a quick write-up of the history behind April Fools' Day but it's covered in depth all over the Internet.  This is a neat site and this of course is the standard treatment.

I decided to poke around a bit elsewhere for examples of famous April Fools' jokes from the past.  The links above have a few good ones but the one I liked best occurred in 1957 on the BBC Television program Panorama.  The show, which premiered in 1953 and continues to air today is a current affairs documentary program in the vein of CBS' 60 Minutes.  However, on April 1, 1957 BBC viewers saw a public interest segment dedicated to a unique crop harvest. It's believed by some to be the first example of an April Fools' prank carried out on television....

bbc.co.uk

"The hoax Panorama programme, narrated by distinguished broadcaster Richard Dimbleby, featured a family from Ticino in Switzerland carrying out their annual spaghetti harvest.

It showed women carefully plucking strands of spaghetti from a tree and laying them in the sun to dry.

But some viewers failed to see the funny side of the broadcast and criticised the BBC for airing the item on what is supposed to be a serious factual programme.  Others, however, were so intrigued they wanted to find out where they could purchase their very own spaghetti bush."
...........

Thanks to the marvels of the Intertoobs the original segment survives for your viewing pleasure.  I believe this is the first time the actual footage has been shown on Daily Kos.

Ramen!  Hey, any well-conceived, well-executed practical joke can fool a lot of gullible people some of the time.  But here at GUS our message is "don't be fooled" by the dangers of smoking and the associated health risks.  If there's one term which sums up smoking in a nutshell it's "foolish". It's foolish to start, foolish to continue, but never foolish to quit.  If you've been thinking about kicking the habit any old time at all is the perfect time to give it a try.  The GUS community is always right here at your disposal with plenty of free advice and encouragement.

Let's close out today's GUS with a bonus "fool" track from 1972 and The Main Ingredient, a name they took in 1968 from a Coke bottle.  One of the backup singers in TMI was none other than Cuba Gooding, Sr.

Everyone have a safe and happy week!

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird...). Weekly GUS Diary Schedule (regular diarists featured in bold) is below. And look at all those open slots just calling your name!

If you can spare a few hours, please consider hosting GUS - doesn't have to be a permanent slot; it can be a one-time deal or just an open thread!

New voices are ALWAYS appreciated and always welcome!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
