The Williams Institute at UCLA has released the results of a
new poll on state-by-state support for marriage equality (full results here:
PDF). While support for marriage equality has grown in all fifty states, according to the poll, wide disparities in support are found from state to state and region to region.
The highest level of support for marriage equality (62%) was found in the District of Columbia. In addition to DC, majority (50%+) support for marriage equality was found in twelve states: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
The lowest level of support for marriage equality (31%) was found in Louisiana. Support for marriage equality under 35% was also found in nine other states: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
No surprises here: The highest levels of support for marriage equality are found in the Northeast and on the West Coast; and the lowest levels of support are found in the South. In-between are many Midwest and Rocky Mountain states with levels of support between 35% and 50%.
