  • Perhaps nothing illustrates how disconnected the Republican Party is from modern America than the GOP response to Jay-Z and Beyonce visiting Cuba. Led by Sen. Marco Rubio, the nutcase right is in an uproar over it. Because Communism. Watch former Bush spokeswoman Dana Perino on the mic:

Ho ho! He he! "The funniest thing I have ever seen in my life" says one Foxbot.

  • Jay-Z, never one to talk a controversy lying down, teamed up with Timbaland and Alicia Keys' husband Swizz Beatz to put down his own response for the record in an Open Letter:

I'm in Cuba, I love Cubans
This communist talk is so confusing
When it's from China, the very mic that I'm using
I suppose we can do billions of dollars in trade and travel with a Communist dictatorship halfway around the world, but can't do a thing with a Communist dictatorship 90 miles away. Americans can visit any nation in the world without special permission except Cuba. Unless you're a Cuban-American, which explains Rubio's trigger.
  • Things got so ridiculous, naturally the Washington establishment press elite, namely Politico, had to ask the White House about Jay-Z's lyrics. Jay Carney's dismissive response:
    It's a song, Donovan.
  • What the DC press failed to report, however, was how well received Jay-Z and Beyonce were in Havana. Isn't that the real story here? The gradual breaking down of this ridiculous embargo? (I'd like to see Rubio or any Cuban-American politician attract a crowd like that in Havana.) (h/t to Cheryl Contee of Jack & Jill Politics)
  • There has been a United States embargo against Cuba since 1960. Yes, two entire generations have been born and raised since it was put in place. Most of us have no idea why it exists. The embargo is just like Republicans: old and stupid.
  • Meanwhile, guess what is flourishing in Cuba among the youth? Hip Hop.(More on this later today.)
  • Speaking of which, a special shout out to the Progressive Era (Pro Era) crew led by Brooklyn impresario Joey Badass. Congratulations on the successful first leg of your Beast Coast tour! Go Youth!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
