This diary is written directly to Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA).
He is the one who's making all the dubious connections between the Boston Bombers' immigrant status and immigration reform.
So, here's a bit of irony for the old Senator:
The guy whose SUV was carjacked last Thursday night was also an immigrant. From China. And it was his eventual escape and call to 9-1-1 that ultimately led the authorities to catch the alleged criminals.
Put THAT in your immigration policy, and smoke it, Senator.
Please, people, put this on your Twitter, Facebook, etc. It is EXTREMELY important that this is known by all Americans.
You'll find the whole story in this Boston Globe article.
The 26-year-old Chinese entrepreneur had just pulled his new Mercedes to the curb on Brighton Avenue to answer a text when an old sedan swerved behind him, slamming to a stop. A man in dark clothes got out and approached the passenger window. It was nearly 11 p.m. last Thursday.
Yes, Senator Grassley, he's even an entrepreneur. And an engineer. Going for his Master's degree, no less.
“Death is so close to me,” Danny recalled thinking. His life had until that moment seemed ascendant, from a province in Central China to graduate school at Northeastern University to a Kendall Square start-up.
“I don’t want to die,” he thought. “I have a lot of dreams that haven’t come true yet.”
Dreams. Immigrant dreams. He came to America to make it big. Go to Graduate school. Maybe start his own business.
And Republicans want to keep people like "Danny" out. Or at least, harder for them to stay in.
His quick-thinking escape, authorities say, allowed police to swiftly track down the Mercedes, abating a possible attack by the brothers on New York City and precipitating a wild shoot-out in Watertown that would seriously wound one officer, kill Tamerlan, and leave a severely injured Dzhokhar hiding in the neighborhood. He was caught the following night, ending a harrowing week across Greater Boston.
Senator, I think it's time to open BOTH of your eyes on immigration, not just the right one.
