In my latest installment of the "Raging Chicken Press Interview Series," I had the opportunity to interview In These Times labor journalist Micah Uetricht. In the interview, Micah described that those who were involved in the strike were from different communities and different backgrounds. He described that those involved in the Chicago Strike were mostly first time union members who have never had a union background in their family, and they included college students who recently graduated college, members of the African American community and workers who have turned to the service sector because they had lost their previous career due to the recession.
In my opinion, I believe that we are slowly witnessing a budding movement, and even though it may not diffuse as quickly as Occupy did, it has the potential of continuing that spirit of Occupy. I also believe that make such "audacious" demands, such as $15, is something the labor movement needs to make because we haven't had anything tangible to fight for for the past 30 years.
