So, normally I have very little issue (relative term here...explanation coming) with my pay card.  McDonald's as of 2/27/13 has gone paperless with it's payroll, and we were all issued these nifty little pay cards that would have our paychecks deposited on them no later than 7am every Wednesday (pay day).

Today, however, I was somewhat concerned when I didn't have the customary text message alert saying that my paycheck had been loaded onto my card...this was going on 2 hrs ago when I woke up.

After finding out that there was indeed a balance command for the text message number, I quickly sent that, and the nightmare began...

According to the balance message that I got back, instead of having a three digit number (new balance w/today's pay check added), I only have $1.87 on my card.  This was the balance that was on there yesterday after getting FloridaSNDad the gatorade he needed after spending the day before ill.

So, I begin making phone calls (after of course I find a pay stub that has my nine digit employee number on it).  I bounce back and forth attempting to get through to the pay check card number and the McDonald's service center to try and figure out what in the hell is going on.

Two hours I spent on the phone, being told that all customer service representatives are busy due to high call volume (no kidding) and getting a busy signal (service center).  I'd even made a phone call to my store, and my old store to see if there were issues with the pay card and people getting their money today.  My current store responded in the affirmative that there were people that did not have their money on the card.

This normally would not have been a problem, except for the fact that we -really- need groceries today.  Otherwise, it is hotdogs, mac n cheese & ham, or ramen/soup for everyone tonight as we round up the rest of the change everywhere and get a can of do food for Freya, and hope and pray that the issue is resolved tomorrow.

The pay card that they've issued has been nothing but headaches for me since I got it, as I've been locked out of their webpage since I registered/activated the account back in Feb.  Otherwise, I'd have just transferred the balance of my card to my Suntrust account (which I'm working on getting rid of anyway due to the closest branch being in Gainseville), and been done with it.

Ultimately, my goal is to set up a bank account locally (already know which bank I'm going to), but I've got to be able to get my birth certificate first (which I need to order from MA) and then get my license renewed so I can finally open the bank account - but if the money isn't there...then I'm stuck...still.

I just want my pay check so I can get groceries.  Is that too much to ask?

7:28 AM PT: 10:28am: Just got off the phone with the McDonald's service center, and was told that, yes they are experiencing problems with their paycard services, to check the balance in 2 hrs, and if it isn't there to call them back.

7:54 AM PT: THE CASH HAS ARRIVED!!! THE MONEY IS THERE...FINALLY!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  It's going to be a long 2 hours (11+ / 0-)

to find out if we get to go for groceries today or not. Add in this is Caedy's only day off until Sunday for us to actually go, and it's supposed to rain this afternoon (so we wanted to get it done early since we walk).... and you have just a wonderful time at our house today LOL.

I had all my house work done, the grocery list made, the library books packed and ready to go back before 8 am. That way we could be leaving like.. an hour ago.

affecting people all over and they are just as frustrated as you are.  These pay cards, IMO are spawns of the devil.  Open an account with a good local bank who will respond to your needs ASAP.  I didn't know you had to have a birth certificate to open an account?  Seems most would be eager to have you part with your money.  Hang in there....

      •  if you can find a credit union instead of a bank (6+ / 0-)

please go that route. It's better for you, cheaper, and keeps your money out of the clutches of the bank system.

Also, how long have you worked for McD's? I don't know about where you are but I have a friend who's worked for them for more than 5 years here in TX and she can get her wages direct deposited to her account with the credit union.

about the credit union in the area, and as far as I know there is only one, but I do like the idea of going with a credit union, I've been with one before.

I've worked with McD's for nearly 7 years, and have never had a direct deposit problem before.  It is just a matter of finding the bank that will work for me.

the way of CUs, if you'd like. My SO turned me on to our CU back in 1990. I don't think I could go back to a bank, now.

    •  They also get to charge you fees (4+ / 0-)

to pull cash out of the account. There is no bank at which you can just go make a withdraw, it HAS to be done through an ATM, so you get hit with fees twice, once from the ATM's bank, and once through the paycard. We try to get cash back at stores, sometimes you still get hit with fees, but at least not double.

At a bare minimum, I would like to see employers and/or the paycard vendor have to pay all fees related to withdrawal upfront.

But that still doesn't solve the problem of not being able to simply deposit the entire amount into one's bank or credit union account. Most ATMs only give out $20 bills, which means the paycard will always have a little bit left on it. Maybe the vendor's website should provide for a live check to be issued on request, as well as a wire transfer without charge. Or the vendor should have to pay interest on the balance remaining week-to-week.

Really, though, employers shouldn't use these stupid paycards to begin with.

      •  many many CUs do not charge member ATM fees! (0+ / 0-)

also, CU-A will take ATM business for CU-B thru X if they're all in the same CU reciprocal network. My CU here in Eugene OR is in a network that lets me use CU-ATMs in Vancouver BC with no charges! (as well as all over OR & WA)

are dozens of branches (it seems) in our "little" town here, of maybe a half-dozen CUs! but maybe it's the "close to us" part...

didn't recognize "TD bank" but my Canadian did. It's only on the East Coast. that's interesting, their ATMs don't appear to have in-system charges from one branch to another -- these days I wouldn't be surprised at anything a commercial bank might try to get away with!

we have no freaking idea. It's a McDonald's paycard. So you get hit with bank fees at the ATM, and there's little choice if you need to take out more cash than what you can get cash back at a store. There is no bank to go to.

Now once she orders her birth certificate from the state in which she was born, and pays to get her licence renewed and her address changed, THEN she can open a local bank account and get direct deposit. We just haven't had the money for her to do that yet. Maybe next week (I'm still tired of those three words).

  •  Computers are wonderful ... until they fail (5+ / 0-)

I have direct deposit and I am always wary about whether or not the money will be there since it is all computerized and there are rarely any ways of dealing with them.  Of course, real people that might listen to you are an endangered species.

Last night on the news they had a segment about some state tests the kids need to have to get passed.  The problem was they took the tests on computers and the system get messed up and lost 2 days worth of tests.  So the kids need to take them again. Seems the victims are the ones who always punished.

Glad you finally got your money.
