Looks like it's time for me to dust off the chart again.
Board OKs group to pursue proposal to block insurance coverage for abortions in Michigan
Lansing — A group backed by Right to Life of Michigan has been approved to circulate petitions seeking a new state law prohibiting health insurance companies from covering elective abortion procedures.
The ballot committee No Taxes for Abortion Insurance wants to require women to purchase optional riders to cover abortion, even in cases of rape or incest.
The Board of State Canvassers on Wednesday approved the group's petitions for a statewide ballot initiative. If they can get the required 258,088 valid voter signatures, the proposed law could be adopted by the Legislature or put before voters in 2014.
Yes, that's right. The Michigan forced-birthers are now trying to make it illegal for health insurance plans--not just public ones, but PRIVATE insurance plans as well--from including coverage for abortion procedures without forcing women to purchase a separate rider.
And their justification?
Asked by a reporter how women could be expected to purchase abortion insurance in preparation of being raped, Listing responded: "Nobody plans to have an accident in a car accident, nobody plans to have their homes flooded. You have to buy extra insurance for those two."
Yes, that's right--if you live in a flood-prone area like New Orleans, you're being irresponsible by not carrying flood insurance; if you're a poor driver, you're being irresponsible by not carrying auto insurance; and if you happen to have a vagina and uterus, you're being irresponsible by not carrying abortion insurance.
Because, after all, "being a woman" is an inherently risky "lifestyle choice" these days.
Words fail.
