When I was a union organizer in my early 30′s building the Georgia State Employees Union – SEIU 1985 in the late 1980′s – I got a call one day from the IRS. They said they were going to audit the local and that they wanted all our files – every leaflet, every internal memo, every board meeting’s minutes. We were a new, young local union without a dime that wasn’t spent immediately, dealing with a hostile state government in Ronald Reagan’s second term.
We complied and didn’t complain. When the IRS agent came to our office in Atlanta, I gave him everything he asked for even though I was seething. I didn’t call the press or complain publicly, but I did ask him why a small poor organization like ours would be audited.
He said YOU MADE SOMEONE MAD AND YOU’RE ON A LIST. GET USED TO THE AUDIT.
He found nothing wrong or illegal and gave us a clean audit.
I recall this as an answer to the teabagger groups who complain about the IRS audits.
It is silly and infantile to think that you can create a “tax exempt” organization with a name that screams political activity and then complain about an IRS audit about your tax exempt status.
Hey right-wingers! If you’re gonna play hardball and throw at somebody’s head, don’t act shocked that someone checks you out.
I laugh at the shrieking, howling, and crying of Cowboy Dick Armey’s teabagger groups because they were audited. What did they expect when they were created for a political purpose and then assume non-political tax exempt status.
It is sickening, and it is another example of radical right-wing Republican hypocrisy.
THEY WANT ONE SET OF RULES FOR THEMSELVES AND ANOTHER SET OF RULES FOR EVERYONE ELSE.
