First the latest attempt to silence Gun Safety efforts, of one of the movements most prominent spokespersons:
Bloomberg Ricin Letter Linked to Gun Control Effort
VOA News, May 29, 2013
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg says a poison-laced letter sent to his office appears to be linked to his high-profile campaign for gun control.
Bloomberg spoke to reporters late Wednesday after traces of the deadly poison ricin was discovered on two letters sent to the mayor. He said at least one of the letters cited his work for tougher U.S. gun laws, but that he would not be deterred.
[...]
Bloomberg was a prime organizer of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a group formed in 2006 with a meeting of 15 mayors. The group now comprises more than 950 mayors from across the country.

PS. This sounds like an "
assault" to me. If you have a better descriptor of the event (perhaps "random violence") please suggest how this "threatening" event should be labeled in the comments.
Now for a hypothetical response to these insidious events against Michael Bloomberg and his staff, borrowing some "rationales" from the NRA playbook:
1) The only answer to bad guy with a Ricin-laced letter, are more good guys with Ricin-laced letters.
2) If you make it more difficult to get Ricin-laced letters, then only the bad guys will have them.
3) Trying to trace the location(s) of the senders of such letters, will only lead to a Government Ricin Registry.
4) Ricin-laced letters don't kill people, it the people that deliver the mail, in the heat of their daily grind, that kill people.
5) Perhaps the Mayors-Against-Ricin should have better protected themselves, by purchasing the appropriate Ricin-detection equipment, and hiring the professional staff that knows how to use that equipment.
6) Maybe Michael Bloomberg should "arm" himself.
Note: This is an exercise in "applied logic" and not real-world practical suggestions to actually protect the safety of innocent people. Please try to keep your replies within the same "classroom context." Thank you.
