The new College Republican National Committee report on how the GOP can talk to da kids today has been making the rounds
because it is freaking hilarious. First off, it opined that the young people just weren't into the hipness that was Mitt Romney, because we really, really needed another report on that. Also, it appears young people apparently still blame Republican policies for all that economic
stuff that happened, even though Republicans have tried to make it very clear that it wasn't their fault.
One of the conclusions, however, is that the Republican Party just needs to better explain themselves on this stuff and then the young folks will obviously beat a path to their door.
“Instead of focusing on a very nebulous big term like ‘big government,’ which resonates kind of confusingly to a lot of young people and negatively in some instances, what we can do instead is focus on, what do we mean when we say ‘big government,’” says Alex Smith, chairwoman of the College Republican National Committee — referring to slashing spending and reducing bureaucracy and ineffective programs. “By focusing on and zeroing in specifically on these issues, we will be able to talk to younger voters in a much smarter, targeted way.”
Oh, well of course. That'll fix everything.
"Hi, we're Republicans and we want to slash government spending."
"Um, okay. Slash what?"
"You know, big government."
"Yeah, but what part?"
"The bureaucracy part, obviously. Of the big government."
The argument is apparently predicated on America's young people being morons.
There's also the matter of the social divide between Republicans and young Americans, but that too can be tweaked by simply not bringing those things up so much. That way the GOP will be free to focus on economic issues, which young people think they suck at, or how to make their candidates seem less like robotic automatons sent from the future to bore people to death.
