Does social networking make you want to run and hide under a pile of blankets? Is your Facebook newsfeed just one big TMI? Do you think
Twitter is for narcissists? Well, then, there just might be a social networking platform designed for you. Actually, scratch that—it's an "anti-social network." No, I'm not talking about
George Michael Bluth's Faceblock.
This one is real, and it's called "Hell is Other People."
'Hell Is Other People' is a new web application designed specifically to keep you separated from your friends.
Using data taken from Foursquare, the app attempts to warn you when you're getting too close to anyone you know.
Described as "an experiment in anti-social media" the site says it "will track your "friends" and calculate optimally distanced locations for avoiding them".
In other social networking news this week ...
- Purists may object to the word "tweet" being added to the OED.
- DotCom, a social network for patient care, may change the way clinicians and colleagues communicate.
- Surprise, surprise: when criminals post about their crimes on Facebook, it can lead to time in the slammer.
On Friday, Facebook — in the wake of a scandal involving National Security Agency leaks — reported on its own website that in the last six months of 2012, it had received between 9,000 and 10,000 user data requests from local, state and federal governments. Between 18,000 and 19,000 Facebook user accounts were affected by the requests, which ran the “gamut — from things like a local sheriff trying to find a missing child, to a federal marshal tracking a fugitive, to a police department investigating an assault, to a national security official investigating a terrorist threat,” stated Facebook’s general counsel Ted Ullyot.

Leap below the orange puff to see what stories generated here at Daily Kos made the rounds in social media the week of 6/10/13 to 6/16/13.
As always, stories highlighted in orange are stories written by front-pagers. Everything in gray is content produced by community members.
FACEBOOK:
Jen Hayden's post about the Nevada woman sexually assaulted in a courtroom was the #1 hit this week, by far. It dominated our traffic charts for days, and no wonder: what an outrageous and terrible story. I dare you to read it and not feel the the rage.
Nine out of 15 stories were produced by Daily Kos community members this week. Nice! And MinistryOfTruth's open letter to the people who hate Obama more than they love America—a diary from January 2012—resurrected itself again.
REDDIT:
Top 5 Reddit hits this week were all diaries written by community members, which, as we've seen in past week, seems to be a trend.
Okay, I think we all need to take a moment here and applaud The Troubadour, who's got three stories on the Reddit top 5, and one on Facebook, too.
TWITTER:
Jen Hayden's big hit made Twitter, as well as two comics. And notice the date of the #1 Twitter hit this week? Yeah, it's 6 months old. Another diary resurrected!
