GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a self-sustaining community support diary for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are quitting or thinking of quitting, or have quit, please -- join us! You can also click the GUS tag to view all diary posts.
The GUS library is resource for those looking for information on quitting smoking.
The Gus Library The GUS library is really looking impressive these days. Check it out and thank all who have done the very nice work.
A message to all quitters: You don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as practice for the real quit.
Tonight I will present a brief, disjointed appeal to the reader to get checked.
You can do it.
First the music. "Down in the Bottom" by Walter Becker of Steely Dan.
.
.
Smoking cigarettes is most often associated with lung cancer, or esophageal cancer. Smoking is less recognized as a risk factor in colon cancer. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, reduced amounts of animal fats and red meat and moderation in alcohol intake is a good start to good colon health. Quitting smoking is also a critical step.
Smoking and other risk factors for colon cancer.
The risk of colon cancer caused from smoking is even higher if you are a woman. Smoking and colon cancer
Colon cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer but it is one of the most curable if it is detected early. If you are over 50 and/or have a family history of colon cancer, you should be going in for a colonoscopy about every 5 years.
With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), colonoscopies are included in the procedures for disease prevention and are probably covered with your insurance policy. Check first but get scheduled soon.
Colonoscopies and ObamaCare
I list a few links for those wanting more information.
CDC Colon Cancer Awareness Month (March)
Colon Cancer Alliance
While maybe a colonoscopy is not something many people actually look forward to, the benefits far outweigh any discomfort or inconvenience. The actual procedure is relatively painless. The main unpleasantness is in the lead up to the procedure, you must prepare yourself and be squeeky clean.
About two days before your appointment you stop eating food that is difficult to digest like apple skins, potato skins, sweet corn, etc.
The day before your appointment you are not allowed any solid food and are limited to clear liquids. Gatoraid is a good choice but you cannot have any of the red, purple or green flavors.
Late in the day, you are required to drink a foul tasting liquid followed by a large amount of water. There are several versions of this liquid but they are all foul and difficult to swallow. Get past this and the worst is almost over.
This liquid is a potent laxative. The effects are impressive. You should be at home for this.
Que the music soundtrack (1st Vid) and play the the action video with the sound off. (2nd video). Repeat 2nd video over and over and over.
And over.
You get the idea.
.
.
Sleeping while hungry is not easy. A restless night is not unusual. When the morning finally comes, most people are looking forward to going to the appointment.
After the standard check in procedure, you put on that silly hospital gown and get wheeled into the examination room and are given a sedative. You are in another place when the examination is performed.
.
.
.
.
Coming off the sedative is strange. You may not remember getting dressed but you will slowly realize it is over. You may be groggy but you will know you have not eaten in two days.
.
.
Since you are not able to drive yourself home, your friend will meet you with a ride. To repay the favor, you should buy him/her lunch, preferably at an "All You Can Eat" buffet.
And then you are done for another five years. Easy.
