The Daily Bucket is a regular feature of the Backyard Science group. It is a place to note of any observations you have made of the world around you. Insects, weather, meteorites, climate, birds and/or flowers. All are worthy additions to the bucket. Please let us know what is going on around you in a comment. Include, as close as is comfortable for you, where you are located. Each note is a record that we can refer to in the future as we try to understand the patterns that are quietly unwinding around us.
Song Sparrow singing sweetly (between attacks on our windows)
It has been going on now for 3 or 4 days - one crazy Song sparrow is spending the entire day flying at and pecking our windows. He is gentle and doesn't hit hard, but it's been constant. When does he eat and drink? What is he trying to accomplish? In between attacks, he sits on the railing of the deck and sings.
A quote often attributed to Albert Einstein seems to capture the situation perfectly.
Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
Although it's not clear what the results are that he expects. Maybe he is getting some kind of gratification from this activity. To us, he just seems insane. All the other birds in the area appear to ignore him and go about their important business. Nothing deters him for long. Even when our dog goes out to investigate, he persists. It almost makes one wish for a visit from the Cooper's hawk that comes by occasionally.
Anyway, the bucket today was empty so I'm offering this.
Please tell us what is going on in your neighborhood and let us know approximately where you are.
