Governor Paul LePage of Maine this morning announced that he would veto a 2/3rds supported bipartisan compromise budget and followed up his remarks by saying that Democratic State Senator Troy Jackson “claims to be for the people but he’s the first one to give it to the people without providing Vaseline.”

LePage is infamously crude. He’s told the Maine NAACP to "kiss my butt", joked that his opposition to banning Bisphenol A (BPA) in child products worst outcomes would be “little beards” on women, suggested that the IRS is "the new Gestapo" in his official weekly radio address, et cetera. The Governor has been on a veto tear recently and has been lobbing continual bombastic insults at opponents and banning administration officials from publicly testifying on the budget or talking to selected newspapers in the state.

In early July LePage will be hobnobbing with the Maine GOP elite and Jeb Bush at Walker Point in Kennebunkport to raise funds for his re-election. Which brings us to our poll…

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Thanks, Bruce. (7+ / 0-)

Sitting here with my brother, Kossack bastrop over in Port Clyde. I just read this out loud to him and his reaction, I think, sums up LePage perfectly:

    "What a shitbag."

    I concur.

I resent that. I demand snark, and overly so -- Markos Moulitsas.

I am quick to envision people of the deep south as radical, racists, right-wing, rednecks who live with odd people who believe odd things.

However, as a northerner I must admit that Maine, New Hampshire, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa and Pennsylvania share far to many traits with deep southerners.

    •  That is a gross mischaracterization of Maine. (3+ / 0-)

It is true that there are some very odd people in Maine indeed (I like to think I'm one of them) but your character assassination of the Pine Tree State (Vaselineland?) and your deeply offensive over-generalizations about Southerners demonstrate total ignorance of either the South or Northern New England.

You are quick to envision alright--quick to envision offensive stereotypes about entire regions and states and tell Mainers that they live in a culturally deprived back-water atmosphere which shares radical, racist, right-wing rednecks with the Deep South because we all know that all Southerners are all these things.

Paul LePage is an asshole. His election was a bit of a fluke. Mainers came to their senses and voted the Democrats back to the majority in both houses of the lege. Maine is actually a very progressive state. For instance, unlike Alabama, Maine passed marriage equality. At the ballot box. It has tight environmental and conservation laws. It is a strong welfare state. It is a lot of very progressive things. It ties with Vermont as the least religious state in the nation. Do we have lots of farmers and fishermen? We sure do. Are they all rubes? Of course not. Do we have kooks? We sure do--one of them is Governor. But the things you say about both the South and about Northern New England are untrue, they are unkind, and they are unnecessary.
