Well it didn’t take long for those who believe that bigotry is not a malignancy of our times and that bigotry is a harmless product that we all indulge in from time to time. Here’s a facebook group (Bring Back Paula Deen) who believe Paula Deen should not receive any form of discipline for her insensitivity. The only way we can change the prejudice that flows like ‘whipped cream’ through our daily life is to make obvious that it will no longer be tolerated. thinkingblue

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

and back each other up, that's for sure! If Food Network hadn't canned her, then I would have certainly stopped watching the network (which I watch quite a bit right now, a love to cook).

They are, like all bullies, cowards who revel in an audience - as long as it is a safe audience.  The internet and social media give them a perfect venue for this, however many sites now will not allow them to remain anonymous.

If Food Network hadn't canned her...
I am betting the pun was unintentional, but I loved it!

Paula Deen is toast.  Stick a fork in her, she's done.

    •  I hope Paula Deen never finds work again. (0+ / 0-)

Racists don't deserve respect or employment.

I think we should take note which people have joined that racist KKK Facebook site and then report to those bigots' employers that they have racists in their employ.

I want to see the bagger rage and tears flow as they are blackballed and unable to earn a living because of their racism.

That would be indeed wonderful :)

  •  There seems to be a talking point (8+ / 0-)

that the Baggers on Facebook are posting as if has anything to do with the reason that Food Network finally rid themselves of this problem.

It begins with the suggestion that everybody says the "n" word and just using the word doesn't make one a racist.  This is  a deliberate obtuseness with regard to Deen's multiple problems with regard to...honesty,  and her assertion she only said the word once back in the olden days of the 80's denies what Food Network has to have known:  Deen's habit of using racial slurs and making anti-Semitic jokes seems to be so casual, and so part of her persona, she had to have pulled these stunts on the set...in front of staff, and they knew it was a matter of time before this got out.

I am willing to bet that they allowed this thing to go so far, probably told her to settle the harassment suit, but her hubris was such that she thought she could brazen it out.   After all she got away with having diabetes for three years before she was able to turn that into a huge endorsement deal.

I think the Bagger embrace of Deen is part of culture which allows the racist underpinning of the entire Tea Party movement,  They identify with her, even as they are in denial their gleeful use of the most obnoxious language might backfire on them (especially as employers are looking at the posting history people being considered for hire.  I had one member of this brain trust who said that employers have no right to restrict the free speech rights of the employees on the job.  IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL!)  And if I hear about her being an old lady who is a product of her times, I will scream.  She is one year older than I am, and I also came of age during the civil rights movement, and I made my choice in my teens what side I was on.  I lived in the South, and even as a second grader I could tell Jim Crow was wrong.  Paula made as choice the same time to be ally herself with Bull Conner and Lester Maddox.

In any case, Deen is no idiot, she knew exactly what kind of environment she created, and I am sure she had been warned many times by FN to knock it off...and now she has a fan base which is just like Sarah Palin.  Bless her heart.

  •  i have a problem ... (0+ / 0-)

you simply can not tell people what they ought to feel or even what is right for them to feel.

they have to evolve to it... grow up, mature, gain empathy.

progressives simply being intolerant of those we label "intolerant" doesn't change anything. in fact, it keeps it hot in a bad way.

Let Paula Deen and her stupid, repulsive, and unacceptable ideas fade because most of us decide to let it fade, not because we now engage defenders of Ms. Deen.

let's not grow this. Let example win by the good behavior of those of us who seek more harmony, wisdom, and peace and brother/sisterhood with all earthlings...

by the time you are ten,  you are pretty much out of the empathy achievement department.

And those who enable people like Deen by suggesting we should be tolerant of this kind of overt and casual racism are part of the problem which has made this kind of expression of the most obnoxious racism socially acceptable.

The ostrich approach never works.  And setting a good example is lost those who hold us in utter contempt.

      •  this isn't an ostrich approach. nor is it (0+ / 0-)

        using intolerance to fight intolerance.

i am not the thought police and have lost all interest in telling people what is right and/or wrong. it doesn't work. and it wastes time and creates more and more fires to put out.

and what would you do if most people in America supported Deen? then what?

i'm not sure how to thread this needle, but there must be a better way to entice people's brains to consider living in harmony and respect with the world around them and next door to them.

          •  totally agree. (0+ / 0-)

and i say we do it ourselves: be better people and by finding better ways to entice others not to objectify or demonize those they view as other or different.

but first, you have to stop your kids from killing bugs for no good reason. things like this are part and parcel... do we challenge ourselves... ask ourselves ... really think about the decision to simply to smash a bug?

or does a creature need to attain a certain size to be considered? or regarded as special in one's culture? the outrage over dogs being slaughtered for meat comes to mind... and yet the whole of American Industrial Farming is criminal beyond words.

and i type that even as i eat meat, but eat less and only farm raised, but even that begins to eat away at my conscience.

                sorry.

I apologize to all those offended by my demonization of crawling and biting insects.

I also say that ignoring racist trolls is enabling their behavior and has contributed to the culture which once more has made the expression of overt racism socially acceptable.

              •  then perhaps you are a reactionary (0+ / 0-)

as an adult, could it hurt to ask a child why they feel the urge or what right they have to simply kill another creature?

perhaps you are a bug smasher. and a smasher of racists as well. your way, your way of thinking, is not mine. that much is clear.

  •  Despite It All, She Just Couldn't Help Herself.... (0+ / 0-)

Paula had it going on.....2 TV shows on the Food Network, a food line, kitchenware, cookbooks, a representation deal w/ a diabetic drug company & she even got her two sons established w/ the Network.

But then.....what she really believes came dribbling out.

Still she looked positively shell shocked in her two rambling apology videos.  I fell sorry for her.  She looked wretched @ what she had done to herself.

FB isn't going to be able to fix this.

  •  Yeah, my redneck relatives and friends (0+ / 0-)

were out in force on facebook yesterday with the bring back Paula Deen thing. It'll probably be worse today. I haven't looked yet.

    Sigh.
