Nelson Mandela has suffered a setback in his health.
As is now being reported by the South African government, and just about every news agency on the planet, his health is described as critical.
I'm lighting a candle as a mark of deep respect and love for a life well spent, a struggle fought with tenacity, determination and compassion.
If you pray, or simply send out positive thoughts, please do so for President Mandela, his family and the people of South Africa
I'll share an anecdote here:
Throughout my childhood, my Mum boycotted South African goods with a passion one can only imagine. She was like that. She knew right from wrong, and apartheid was not just wrong, it was inhuman.
Never a product from that country could cross our threshold.
One day, Mum came home from shopping with a big sack of Outspan oranges.
"Nelson Mandela is free", she said, "and South Africa needs all the revenue it can get".
We ate a lot of South African fruit that year :)
While I can hope that he might recover, we surely must face the mortality of a man who has inspired the world.
Whatever your future, Mr President, may the journey be peaceful.
