We must again march just as we did in the 60's to get voting rights back. We MUST write all our congressional representatives letting them know these hard fought for rights by my generation will not be surrendered by this generation. The only reason the rights were given in the first place was because they were DEMANDED by people who marched and wrote and bled. Yes some of us gave up our lives to earn the right to vote. That is how hard the fight was then. Don't let that happen again. This is Conservative Republicans only hope of winning enough elections to gain full racially conservative control of the government. They will not give up because they know to do so would mean the end of the republican party as they want it.

They will not give up without a fight as they see this as the battle they have to win to stay in power. We saw all the tricks they tried to pull to win in the last presidential election. In some cases the voting rights act was the only thing that stopped them from ignoring the 47% and winning.

I do not want to see riots or want any one to die again to regain what we have lost. I would hope we are a more tolerant nation than we were in the 60's.  Conservative racially motivated politicians will not stop trying to take us back to the days when people of color had to sit at the back of the bus. This time if they win it will be anyone that does not look like them or would vote against them. They do not want Latino's to vote either, they do not want anyone who might vote Democratic to vote period!

Recently they had a public meeting here in Dallas to talk about redistricting and the trick they pulled was to only give 48 hour notice. That way there was not enough time for the opposition to muster any real public challenge to their ability t ramrod a rights removing redistricting agenda through.

Republicans know this is their only chance to stop losing power. They will lie, cheat, try to focus attention elsewhere and win if we do not hold their feet to the fire.

We have to let them know we will not stand for this attack on voting rights or lose democracy to those who have the most dollars to control our government.

Conservative Republican politicians understand votes and money. With this Supreme Court win votes-not so much anymore. That is unless you have the right skin color and heritage.

We must win this fight again or become a democracy in name only.

I'm a real nice guy and I approve this message.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    •  I was just sayin' (0+ / 0-)

feets in the streets are all we have left on this.

Voting is simply not enough. The 1960s proved that.

And voting next year isn't going to get any Dem majorities unless this President and the Democrats we do have stop kowtowing to corporate authority. NOW. TODAY.

I want to see some goddamn bravery by those people. I want to see them give up their fucking cushy lives and their fucking cushy privilege for the people they're supposed to represent. And if they can't do that, they are unfit-for-office cowards. It is that simple.

      •  They will get brave when we back them up. (0+ / 0-)

We must give them all the ammo they need by making it plain WE WILL NOT GIVE UP THE RIGHT TO VOTE!!!! I am a white veteran who is retired and has plenty of time to join any protest I can get to. There is already lots of talk on the internet of marches.

If they thought this would give them the white house they had better be prepared to ask there moneybags supporters for billions of dollars because there are going to be millions of feet on the ground demonstrating democracy in action like they have never seen.

  •  I know a good time and place (0+ / 0-)

Oklahoma: birthplace of Kate Barnard, W. Rogers, W. Guthrie, Bill Moyers & Eliz. Warren. Home to proud progressive agitators since before statehood. Current political climate a mere passing dust cloud; we're waiting it out & planning for clearer days.

I heard about that on the radio but now can get details. I probably won't have the money to get to Washington ( SS is great but could be better.) but wouldn't it be nice if we showed up not only in the capital but in EVERY state capital and local towns and cities too!

  •  I wrote a diary advocating (0+ / 0-)

just this several months ago. My point was that in the age of the Internet, true visibility has disappeared. Signing an online petition didn't get Rosa Parks to the front of the bus or lunch served at the Woolworth's counter.

I was irritated because little ol me can't do much to mobilize people on a large scale and when I visited the websites of the groups that can (NARAL, etc.) the only option for activism was signing an online petition.

I didn't get much response - beyond someone suggesting that I start a group on Kos. I found the suggestion wonderfully ironic.

    •  The press covered the Civil Rights movement (0+ / 0-)

but would it do that today? How well did it cover Occupy?

Feet in the streets today will be met with Imperial Stormtroopers and no coverage from the mainstream media.

      •  Imperial Stormtroopers (0+ / 0-)

met feet in the streets in the 60s as well. The marchers were undeterred.

I don't see the Occupy movement as comparable to marching against the roll back of Roe v Wade and voting rights. And believe me, if the stormtroopers try their macing and tear gas tactics with voting rights protests the media will be all over it. Comparisons with the black and white images from the 60s will be everywhere.

    •  Some of us would rather sit at home (0+ / 0-)

and cheer the good guys on but this action is personal!! I fought for those rights, at least that is what they told us we were fighting for. I saw the marches, I attended rallies and underground newspaper meetings. I saw the nightly news as innocents were killed just for daring to march for rights this generation took for granted UNTIL NOW!

Some of my buddies gave their lives and I hope every person who is against our equal right to vote has a personal ghost haunting their dreams.

Don't worry ExpatGirl I may not march beside you but will be with you somewhere, somehow. you were ahead of your time. It just took the rest of us a while to catch up.

Will someone dust off their guitar and sing those folk songs with new words. Were are going to need some music to march to.
