Remember when Wisconsin Republicans absolutely hated the idea of recall elections?
Well, as it turns out, they only hate the idea of recall elections when it's used against them.
After Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin voted for the comprehensive immigration reform bill that was passed by the U.S. Senate, one Wisconsin conservative activist took to Twitter and called for Baldwin to be recalled from office:
START RECALL OF BALDWIN...SHE VOTED & ILLEGAL #IMMIGRATION & AMNESTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOW!!!!!!! #wiright #GOP @SenatorBaldwin
While Wisconsin is
one of nine states that have legal provisions allowing for constituents of a U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator to recall said Representative or Senator from office, there is no provision in the U.S. Constitution that allows for Congress to remove a member of either house of Congress from office based on a constituents' recall.
I find it blatantly hypocritical that Republicans who railed against the right of Wisconsinites to recall elected officials when Republicans were the ones targeted by recall attempts are now calling for the recall of a Democrat.
Just in case you're wondering, the last time there was an attempt to recall a member of either house of Congress was back in 2009, when a group of residents of Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District attempted to get a petition on then-Republican U.S. Representative Joseph Cao, however, the recall attempt never made it to the ballot. Cao lost re-election to Democratic challenger Cedric Richmond in the 2010 general election.
