Hot bullets tear into the flesh of more than 100,000 Americans each year. More than 30,000 of those struck will die.

But… they do care about getting reelected.

So please call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun control. Do it today. And do it again next week. And do it again every week after that until they get the message.

Addendum for June 19, 2013

Every year in the U.S.A., on average: *

-- Over 18,000 people kill themselves with a gun (51 each day)

-- Almost 12,000 people are murdered by a gun (32 each day)

-- Almost 600 people are accidentally shot and killed by a gun (1 each day)

-- Over 51,000 people are shot and wounded in an attack involving a gun (140 each day)

-- Over 16,000 people are accidentally shot and wounded by a gun (43 each day)

-- Almost 4,000 people are wounded attempting to kill themselves with a gun (10 each day).

Total killed by guns each year: Over 30,000 (84 each day)

Total wounded by guns each year: Over 70,000 (193 each day)

Total number of Americans either killed or wounded by guns each year: Over 100,000 (277 each day)

* Brady Campaign (gun deaths from police intervention not included here)

Do you think our government would act like it was sleepwalking if a terrorist organization managed to kill or wound over 100,000 American’s each year? Would our elected representatives simply say there is nothing that can be done. We know, of course, they would do plenty. And they would do it fast.

So why won’t they do something about gun violence in the U.S.A.?

Please help. Call, write, email, or FAX your representatives in Washington, D.C. and tell them to support common sense gun controls. Do it today. And do it again next week. And then every week after that until they get the message.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

very sad.  And then the gun absolutists are always saying that suicides don't count.

Thanks for all the work you do to keep people aware of the daily carnage that, for some, has become the norm.  There is nothing normal about having almost 90 people shot every single day!

  •  WoW (6+ / 0-)

Good work, Tom. Gonna stay home with the dead bolts locked after perusing that carnage!

freedumz. What a total shithole we live in. What came first, the proliferation of gunz or the proliferation of shootings and homicides? I think you'll see these numbers continue to shoot (no pun intended) upward as this shithole goes nutz for more and more gunz.
I've had it, not from the 'criminals', but the 'law abiding responsible gun owners. Had a few incidents over the years but the most recent drove me to buy two from a law abiding responsible gun owner in anticipation of protecting myself from law abiding responsible gun owners.
No, I'm still not allowed to own one.
Neither should 99.9% of them. Motherfuckers are positively insane with the damn things, it truly is a mental illness and I've had enough.
Hope they're happy with that no background check shit.

now has come to seem foreign to me, where serious disputes between people, men in particular, might be settled with a black eye, a few bumps and bruises and maybe even a bruised ego. Been in a few of those "dispute resolution settlements" myself, and I'm sure if asked, most men have.
We're still here to talk about it, to laugh at our stupidity, or lack thereof, to get into a damn physical fight over matters that were trivial enough in reality that now we may be able to recall the fight but not the reason behind it.
Then came the NRA with their troughs of Kool-Aid and in a short period of time seem to have made men just a bunch of paranoid cowards who feel that gunz are the only end all answer to everything all of the time.
There is no courage in hiding weapons upon your person, there is no honor in empowering oneself to kill by stealth those that 10 years ago even may have led to a bloody nose or busted lip. Certainly no honor in using that emboldenment to go throughout ones day literally hoping that someone might just "start some shit" so that they can "make your day".
          But they do.
Keep hearing that we shouldn't lump them into one category, that they aren't ALL a bunch of paranoid idiots that commit "accidents' and :fails", but should we? This is the one and only situation I can possibly think of to where prejudging or stereotyping not only makes sense, but could very well make the difference between being dead, or alive. If you are incorrect and judge one a "good guy with a gun' that isn't, or, a 'law abiding responsible gun owner" that is about become irresponsible it can cost you your life.
To hear each and every one tell it, they are well informed, they are well trained, they are careful, and responsible. Do you believe it just because they say so? Do you believe it because they are on this site? Can anyone on the face of this planet be taken simply at their word when it comes to gunz? Of course they don't want to be lumped into the category of idiots with guns that have done stupid ignorant and reckless shit with gunz- but the fact of the matter is, you simply don't know what they are capable of, period. making the wrong call can cost you your life.
I think of them all the same simply because they are all the same, they are carrying a deadly weapon hidden upon their person. Takes a very paranoid mofo to find that necessary at all times, especially able bodied men.
I can see the need for ANY woman to arm herself. I can see the need for ANY disabled person to arm themselves. I can see workers in certain fields of employment feeling the need to arm themselves. It is understandable.
But every damn male that call himself a man? Nah, don't think so.
Scream 2A rights but I think the screaming should be done to a shrink, something rather twisted to feel so scared of your fellow man 24/7 to feel this shit about carrying around a gun, hidden no less. It's cowardly, plain and simple to me.
         And I'm sick of it.
They stereo type me as a "convicted felon' as if that means anyone who has ever been convicted for something is somehow dangerous to all of mankind and should be tagged and labeled as such to save their version of humanity.
Strangely, no one that knows me knows even suspects that about me, to the point that with whatever 'good' intentions, have not only shown me their gunz, but offered them to me for sale. You can include the friend who is a circuit court judge, and my neighbor who is a law enforcement officer. How would they know? I don't have 'convict' tattooed upon my forehead.
Yes, another incident happened last week involving a 'law abiding responsible gun owner' to me personally, the third incident in the past year. This one made me really think about these 'law abiding responsible gun owners' in the true light for which they should be considered- a bunch of idiots who happen to carry gunz legally.
I value my life as much, or more so, than they do but I'm not Superman, I cannot defend myself physically from a bullet.
So their desire to keep us 'convicted felons' from having to be subjected to a background check can now be considered successful, I may go to jail the next time  a 'law abiding responsible gun owner' uses the fact he is armed to intimidate, or actually attempt to shoot me as has happened, but thanks to the lax laws we have, I will walk away alive.
Thanks to 'law abiding responsible gun owners', two in particular, thank you, now I am just as paranoid of you fuckers, justifiably, as you are of the entire world with no justification.
But now we are on as equal and deadly terms as you seem to have always wanted it to be.
Thank you, and thank your puppeteers who offered you the Kool-Aid you consumed without question.
Just another day in the Gun Crazy U.S.of A.
Hope you're happy with what you've created...

Be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
