The New York Daily News is known, and loathed by some, for its tabloid journalistic style. Which is why the newspaper's front page image for today's edition, well worth seeing, is a welcome and moving gesture:
Unfortunately, this front page image is where the Daily News begins and ends its most prominent coverage related to the question it rightly asks.
For the first (digital) story within its pages when clicking upon the above image is one that chronicles how Zimmerman, again fearing for his life, "needs the weapon now more than ever."
This is the subtitle to the Daily News's lead story on Zimmerman's feeling vulnerable:
George Zimmerman's attorney says his client, who has been in hiding since Saturday night's verdict, needs the weapon now more than ever. The 29-year-old has taken to wearing disguises and a bulletproof vest as he tries to avoid vigilante justice.
This sensational focus on Zimmerman as the victim – the white man again fearing for his life – is precisely the type of distorted race baiting which endangers the lives of black men, unarmed, simply going to the convenience store.
While the Daily News should receive kudos for its later coverage on "the shameful history of racial violence in America," its oblivious, sensational coverage does nothing but add to that shame.
When will it end, asks the Daily News?
The newspaper has much to do with the answer.
