It looks like President Obama is about to throw women, who helped get Obama elected to the White House twice, under the bus by picking Larry Summers, a full-blown chauvinist, to be the next Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.
Summers has been known to make blatantly sexist remarks such as this one from 2005:
The president of Harvard University, Lawrence H. Summers, sparked an uproar at an academic conference Friday when he said that innate differences between men and women might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math careers.
Shaunna Thomas, a co-founder of the feminist organization UltraViolet, said this upon hearing that Summers is reportedly being considered by Obama to be the next Fed chairman:
We are concerned by rumors that Larry Summers, a man known for his offensive and callous opinions on women, is currently being considered to head the Federal Reserve. Women will not soon forget if President Obama picks Mr. Summers for such an important post, a man who believes women are somehow inherently less capable than men.
While Summers is also
a staunch supporter of deregulation of the financial sector, which contributed heavily to the financial collapse of the late 2000's, I find it downright disgusting that President Obama would even remotely consider appointing someone who is known to have an outdated view of women to be the next Fed chairman.
If your state has one or two Democratic senators, contact them and tell them to oppose Larry Summers's confirmation if Obama picks Summers to be the next Federal Reserve Chairman. Also, sign my petition to tell the entire Senate Democratic Caucus to oppose Larry Summer's confirmation if Obama picks Summers to be the next Fed Chairman.
