John Boehner in the role of Captain Renault
With Republican Rep. Steve King's
racist rambling about well-endowed immigrants bringing the GOP's problem with Latino voters back to the forefront, Speaker of the House John Boehner jumped into action. By making a
statement:
Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said in a statement late Tuesday that comments from King, an Iowa Republican, likening so-called DREAMers to drug mules was “wrong.” [...]
“There can be honest disagreements about policy without using hateful language,” Boehner said in his statement. “Everyone needs to remember that.”
Another thing everyone needs to remember? That hate and fear-mongering over immigrants—of the brown variety—has been part-and-parcel of the Republican playbook for years. So Mr. Boehner can shove his shock and outrage.
And if Boehner really wants to do something about immigration reform, he'd allow a vote on the bipartisan immigration reform bill passed by the Senate last month. But he won't, because he knows it would pass. And that's what everyone really needs to remember.
