When Coleman Young was elected the city's first black Mayor in 1974, the business community, republican and some Democrats began a campaign to bring him down make him fail. The business community stopped cooperating and within the first two years began to move out. The mostly white politicians began a vicious campaign to first discredit, make him fail and drive him out of office. Sound familiar?
My older brother attended many committee meetings and told me, it reminded him of Mississippi in the 1950s, because of the vicious opposition to his election. They would not accept his leadership under any circumstances. Politicians blocked or held up anything and i mean anything, that would benefit the citizens of Detroit. Most of their time was spent trying to discredit him in the eyes of blacks in the city. But they kept electing black mayors.
Some businesses started moving out as early as 1975 and others quickly followed suit. Taking revenue and leaving many jobless. Jobs and Detroit's citizens never stopped leaving. The ones staying, had a larger burden, because they were required to make up for the lost revenue.
It took 39 years to finally bankrupt the city and make the point, if you elect a black mayor, and don't stop electing them, we have the power to bring the city down. And they have. For who wouldn't expect bankruptcy as a result?
The problems in Detroit was compounded even more, when the Bain capitals of the country, world. In the 1980 to now, many manufacturing jobs were sent overseas. This was the next to last punch in the gut and upside the head of Detroit. Because regardless of how many jobs had left the city, they still had manufacturing jobs, steel and cars. Steel jobs outsourced overseas, and finally the auto manufacturers going under. President Obama bailed them out, but many workers had already left, or their lives destroyed, because of layoffs years before the bailout. Then the violence skyrocketed. No matter what people tell you, poverty produces violence, because of the vices people feel they have to use to get by.
The final straw, the power of mostly black politicians were totally taken away with the appointment of city managers. So not only has Detroit failed, but no black politician left including the mayor, has any real power at all.
There's no need for those in power to RIOT, because they have the power, positions and money to bring the whole thing down. And they have.
