Sumpin' odd is going on in Pennsylvania.
Here is the story:
In the wake of the recent Supreme Court DOMA ruling, Pennsylvania State Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced that she would not defend Pennsylvania's so-called Defense of Marriage -- hee! -- law in court, as she believes that it is unconstitutional.
And so fell the dominos.
Soon after, the Clerk of Montgomery Co. in suburban Philadephia announced that he would start issuing marriage licenses and registering marriages for any same-sex couples who fit other criteria for the contract, excepting the Defense of Marriage law. He also thinks that law is unconstitutional and he's defying anyone to stop him ... knowing full well that the refusal of the State Attorney to defend the law means that it will take some effort to stop him, if such an effort can succeed at all.
So far, dozens of same-sex couples of applied for marriage licenses in Montgomery Co. A handful of those licenses have already been received.
Now, these handful of couples are on their way to being legally married, right -- despite the fact that the Pennsylvania legislature passed a law designed to punish and oppress same-sex couples and their families by denying them this right.
All the need is someone to perform the marriages.
Enter Elizabeth Goreham, the mayor of State College, PA. As mayor, she has the power to officiate over marraiges and she now says that she's ready to marry any couple that comes to her with with a license, regardless of the gender of the spouses.
Soon, same-sex couples in Pennsylvania may be getting legally married, despite a law passed that bans them from doing so.
Let the games begin.
