Do you remember your first day of school?
As most of you know, I start back to school this week. Teachers report on Tuesday and the kids arrive Thursday morning. There is always some excitement and anticipation at the beginning of a new school year, but nothing equals the experience of a kid's very first day of school.
After all these years, I still remember very clearly my first day in first grade (church kindergarten didn't count). My teacher was Mrs. Wolf, a gray-haired, bespectacled, non-nonsense woman who didn't mind putting a bolo paddle on a kid's butt. I especially remember our first reading lesson. Although I had been read to daily as a child, I had never really tried to read on my own until then.
In those days (1957 to be exact), we were using the Dick and Jane readers. I remember Mrs. Wolf lined us up across the back of the room. She indicated a chart with a picture of a little girl with blonde curls. She said, "This is Sally. Now, what do you think the word underneath her says?" Naturally, we all called out "Sally!" "No," said, Mrs. Wolf, "it says, 'Look!'"
Well, things went OK for me and Mrs. Wolf that year. I was always slow on my arithmetic problems and was consequently late for recess sometimes, but I excelled at reading. I remember she gave each of us a little spiral bound note pad in which she had printed one of the words we were to learn on every page. We had to copy each of them 10 times in the little note pad.
Mrs. Wolf only paddled me one time and thankfully it wasn't on the first day. We were going to the music room once and we had to go through the gym. Instead of walking in line, my six-year old self couldn't help running and jumping at the impossibly high basketball goal. "No running in the gym!" said Mrs. Wolf without a trace of irony. "Get back in line."
When we returned to the room, she came over to me, grabbed me by the upper arm, yanked me to my feet, and paddled me rapidly for about 10 whacks. I was back in my chair before I knew what hit me. I don't remember crying. I think I was too stunned. I definitely didn't tell my parents about it! Despite the paddling, my first grade memories are mostly good.
