Hello all,
It's been an interesting last few months in music. We have the first openly gay country singer singing a song about a gay on straight crush and now we have a country band crossing with a rap artist. I will post the links below the orange squiggle of serendipity...
These are the things that give Republicans nightmares: Social media spreading progressive views and two completely opposite spectrums of people coming together to create something better.
To start with, for those of you who have not seen or heard of Steve Grand, on Jul 2 he posted a video of this song, he has NO label and the video was made by him and his friends. He has been playing piano in a bar looking for his big break. Well he quickly became another youtube sensation, thanks in some part to people like George Takei posting the video as well. Here is the link .
In it Steve tells about falling for a straight man and getting rejected. He hit over 1 million views on youtube in a matter of days. Which is just amazing and thrilling for him as well as gay rights in general. This shows that gay relationships are becoming more and more openly accepted by the public , No 1 Republican fear is that they will lose their major wedge issue regarding gays.
Now we have this next video. I heard the song on my way home today and it blew my mind. Not because the song is an amazing piece of writing but because it is a Country group Georgia Florida State Line; which is following on the heels of some other recent country cross overs on to rock stations, hooked up with Nelly of all people to make a remix of their song. So you have a " Good ole boy " band mixing it up with an African American Gangsta (ish) rapper. Now Nelly has never been super hard core gangsta but still, these are two opposite ends of the social and political spectrum. Plus the video has a nice mix of racial female models in it.
I am sure Republican heads are exploding daily regarding all this. To me this is truly astonishing. I know Country has been having crossovers to rock little by little, people like Shania Twain, Taylor Swift etc etc have had songs that got play on non country stations but to re-mix with a rapper I think is really a huge step for the genre as well as the message it sends to listeners.
I just wanted to post about this and see what the rest of you think.
